Boyne Community School
Junior Rugby, a new ere!
Boyne Community School, Trim Co. Meath are into their second year of schools rugby following affiliation with the IRFU Leinster Branch and the introduction of rugby to the school together with the Club Community Rugby Officer Fergus O Boyle (Athboy RFC) and Mr Bryan Barry (PE Teacher/Coach). Following last year 1st & 2nd North East Development School League, the school entered their first Leinster completion in September. The First round of the Leinster Junior Development Cup saw the Junior Team play St Marys Drogheda. Boyne CC was unluckily with the away fixture and faced a strong St Mary’s team made up of players predominantly with good rugby experience. Boyne CC conceded two early try in the match and were always chasing the game, they closed the gap at half time to within 3 points but St Marys push out the game to win with a comfortable win.
Following a regroup and additional training sessions by both Fergus O Boyle Athboy RFC CCRO and Mr. Bryan Barry (Boyne CC) the Junior Schools started the Development Sheild. Friday 22rd November the fixture was scheduled to be played in Townspark, Athboy RFC, however unprecedented heavy rain fall meant the pitch was unplayable and Boyne CC conceded home advantage. The First round saw them travel to face Grammar School Drogheda however the result favoured the visiting team. The first half saw Boyne CC play a very physical controlled rugby running in 4 trys before the break. The second half saw trys from both teams however it was the visitors Boyne CC that played the better rugby. Final score saw Boyne CC go through to the second round on a final score 15-32.
Round 2 – 7th December, Following another dismal spell of bad weather, this fixture was postponed to the 14th December that saw Oaklands Edenderry travel to Townspark Athboy to face an re-energized Boyne CC, with training numbers to into the thirty it gave the coaches both Fergus O Boyle CCRO (Athboy RFC) and Mr. Bryan Barry (Boyne CC) a difficult task in selecting the starting 15. The game was an early kick off at 11am and was refereed by Mike Lennon from the Leinster Branch referees. The Trim School started the match at huge pace and never let the visitors settle into the game. They controlled both line out and scrums throughout the pitch, they were clinical in defence and ruthless in attack. The “pick and go” play and “keep ball alive” play and the ability of Boyne CC to retain their own position gave the home team a strong advantage. Half time saw the home team lead 32-0 , the second half saw much the same, a yellow card and luxury off all the subs getting a run out still didn’t slow down the overall team performance and the final score of 54-0 saw reach the third round of the shield.
The third round of this completion is to be played in January and Boyne CC eagerly awaits the next round opposition.
