The first ladies' team to play for Avonmouth started up in the 90s. Years later, Lucy and Claire Evans then started a girls’ team to get more girls playing sport. Claire Evans was a huge part of the drive to push the ladies forward and make the sport accessible to all, and show females in the local community that it’s ok to play rugby no matter your age.
Sadly, Claire had to stop playing due to illness and sadly passed away in late 2015. It was decided then to name the ladies team after her and the massive impact she had on the club in cementing females in the sport moving forward, and Avonmouth Claire’s Ladies was born.
Claire’s Ladies started with charity matches, then the team progressed into the league system, with a 3rd place finish last season! The girls’ side of the club has also grown from strength to strength. We now have 4 strong girls’ sides - the U12s, U14s, U16s and U18s, and have had some huge success coming through the ranks.
Over the years we’ve had 13 girls playing for county, and currently boast 3 of the under 18s in the centre of excellence, which is just incredible. It has been amazing to see some brilliant young talent coming up into the ladies' team, and we are so excited for the future of all the female sides of the club.
