Alphington 0 Axminster Town 1

Axminster are through to the next round of the Walter C Parsons Funeral Directors Cup with a hard fought win at The Chronicles.
The heavens opened shortly after the game kicked off which made the playing conditions very difficult. Alphington handled the slippery surface a little better than the Tigers and controlled much of the first half. Axminster looked to use the pace of Sam Dibling and Tony Pinder at every opportunity and they hit the crossbar but otherwise both teams struggled to find their cutting edge.
The second half pretty much started like the first. Alphington playing neat tidy football but they struggled to break down a stubborn Tigers back-line. Jon Hurford replaced Gary Spiller in the 53rd minute to give Axminster more impetus and they broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Tony Pinder out jumped the Alphas defender to flick the ball onto Sam Dibling who raced into the penalty area and poked the ball past the advancing Alphington keeper.
Alphington continued to press but found Axminster a tough nut to crack. A combination of some poor finishing and wayward shooting left the the game on a tightrope. With the strength of Hurford Axminster came into the game more but they were unable to add the score.
Alphington will be frustrated for all their endeavour having controlled the game for long spells and Axminster will be satisfied with their resilient dogged defensive display to come away with the win at The Chronicles.

Axminster will now face Torridgeside on the 14th October at their Donnacroft ground.
