Baildon and Bees have Wizard time in the snow

Baildon and Bees have Wizard time in the snow

Phil Wilson10 Jan 2010 - 19:55

Not even six inches of snow and below-freezing temperatures could prevent rugby union at Jenny Lane yesterday.

With their league match at home to Aireborough a victim of the wintry weather, Baildon’s chairman of rugby Phil Wilson hastily organised a five-a-side snow tag tournament.

At least the sun shone for the five teams taking part – three from Baildon and two from Bradford & Bingley – and there was always the log fire and the bar in the clubhouse to help recuperation.

Adam Hewitt, Tom Massey and Carlos Hassan led the Baildon teams, Phil Greaves and Matt Withers skippering the Bees sides.

Games were five minutes each way, with Mini Mass-ey’s Men handing out a 5-2 defeat to Withers’ Wizard’s Wonders in the opener.

Hassan’s Cheeters then had a 5-5 draw against the Bees Firsts, for whom former player-coach Neil Spence appeared.

Hewitt’s Horrors started with a heavy defeat against Wizard’s Wonders, while Mini Massey’s Men were involved in the Bees Firsts' second draw.

Hassan’s Cheeters then defeated Hewitt’s Horrors but were too tired and cold to pursue their final place, opting instead for a pint by the fireside.

Mini Massey’s Men raced into a 3-1 lead over Wizard’s Wonders in the final but by half-time it was 4-4.

Wizard’s Wonders then added a brace, Mini Massey’s Men pulling a try back before Wizard’s Wonders had a man dismissed for tackling.

However, despite being a man short, Wizard’s Wonders added another try to seal their 7-5 win.
