FA Cup - Second Qualifying Round
Match Report by Sean Geary

Brig were on top for most of the game but were unable to break the deadlock and the only goal of the game came against the run of play in the 78th minute when James Walshaw curled the ball home from the edge of the box to send the visitors into the third qualifying round.

Guiseley started the better of the two sides, but Brig came closest to opening the scoring when Steve Settle glanced a Rob Henry free-kick goalwards but ‘keeper Steve Drench palmed the ball to safety.

On ten minutes Guiseley had a chance of their own when when Walshaw shot from the edge of the area but Lee Dovey was equal to the effort.

Guiseley looked threatening and almost opened the scoring after 25 minutes when Simon Ainge whipped in a free-kick from the left but Danny Ellis’ header hit the bar.

After a bright opening half hour for the visitors, Brig began to gain the upper hand and nearly broke the deadlock after an excellent move.

Andrew Bell nodded the ball out to Settle on the right side and the winger took the ball in his stride before whipping an excellent cross into Bell whose diving header flew narrowly wide.

On the left, Alistair Waddecar was causing all sorts of problems for Ainge and the winger had a curling right-foot effort saved after jinking inside the full-back.

Brig finished the half strongly with Matt Mahoney’s shot deflected over the bar, but the game remained scoreless going into the interval.

Brig picked up where they left off in the second half, however, the first chance fell to Guiseley striker Walshaw, but his angled effort was always rising.

Drench made the save of the match on the hour when he clawed away Matty Kay’s left foot effort from the edge of the box that looked destined for the top corner.

The siege on the Guiseley goal continued when Danny Mahoney cannoned a header off the bar from a Matt Mahoney free-kick, before drilling a half volley towards the bottom corner that was tipped around the post by Drench.

Guiseley were on the ropes now, and Waddecar nearly grabbed that all-important first goal when he pounced on a poor headed backpass by Ainge but his looped effort bounced off the top of the bar with Drench stranded.

Brig were made to pay for failing to capitalise on their domination with just 12 minutes remaining.

Substitute Nicky Boshell played a one-two with brother Danny on the left hand side before pulling the ball back for Walshaw to hit the winner.

The goal was harsh on the home side who had more than matched their counterparts for the majority of the game.

Matt Mahoney led the charge for an equaliser and Luke Atherton moved up to centre forward to try and force a replay but their efforts were to no avail as Guiseley secured their passage to the third qualifying round.
