Barry and Splott gear up for the cup

Barry and Splott gear up for the cup

Ashley Cox27 Aug 2014 - 13:21

Barry face Splott Albion in the Welsh Cup on Saturday, hoping to avoid the fate of Division Two opponents Croesyceiliog a year ago.

The Cardiff side, who play their football in the South Wales Amateur League, won entry to last season's tournament with a 1-0 victory in Gwent; defying the teams' two-tier divide.

Splott would then come within five minutes of further progress; almost forcing extra-time at Caldicot Town, after striking the post in the second half with the scores tied at 1-1.

While Barry's Welsh Cup history stretches back around a century, Albion's first appearance in the country's flagship cup competition came as recently as 2011.

However, in their short time competing for the grand old trophy, Albion have already earned further wins over the likes of AFC Llwydcoed and Cardiff Metropolitan University.

2013 semi-finalists Barry are entered in the first Qualifying Round for the second consecutive season; as is the case for the others promoted from Welsh League Division Three.

Gavin Chesterfield's team began their 2013-14 Welsh Cup journey with an 8-0 win at home to Treforest, before beating AFC Rumney 3-0 at the very same location which will host this Saturday's tie.

Splott suffered relegation to Division Two of the South Wales Amateur League on goal difference; and we expect to find them eager to bounce back by taking another Welsh League scalp.

The Barry squad however will be boosted by the return of defender Bobby Briers, who will be keen to enter a strong display if called upon in what would be his first appearance of the season..

Kick-off on Saturday in Llanrumney is at 2.30pm, with a map of the venue available here. The tie must be settled on the day, as is now standard for Welsh Cup competition.
