Canaries Majestic as Goals “Reign” in on Royals

Barwell were at their footballing best in this one-sided contest at Coles Lane.

Early goals from Liam Kay and Dom Brennan gave the game a justified score line and a third from Kevin Thornton before half time ended the Royals’ hopes. A fourth and fifth from Brady Hickey and Jamie Towers were not overly flattering as Barwell overpowered their hosts.

Early attempts from Thornton, well supplied by the impressive Iyseden Christie and at the other end Reece Leek had Liam Castle scrambling across his line in a rare foray for Sutton.

Towers could have earned a penalty as he was brought down in the Sutton box after a surging run but a minute later the Canaries were ahead as Liam Kay rose in the six yard box to head powerfully Thornton’s pinpoint corner into the net.

After 19 minutes Kyle Rowley’s header from distance looked to be heading goalwards but a timely interception on the line from Scott Lower prevented the home side levelling.

Five minutes later Barwell doubled their lead as Christie headed across the six yard line for Brennan to head into the net from close range.

On the half hour Thornton almost added another but his drive from the left of the box was well palmed round the post by home keeper Lewis Gwilliams.

Gwilliams was again called into action to save Christie’s long range effort over the bar before Jamie Towers laid a ball into the path of Thornton who rifled home from the left of the box just three minutes before the break.

Barwell’s fourth was a well worked play by Nigel Julien who sent a ball wide for Declan Towers who headed to the edge of the box for Brady Hickey. The young midfielder drove the ball low from 25 yards and it was deflected into the net by Christie.

In a rare attack, Sutton looked likely to score through substitute Mark Danks whose curling effort was met by the brilliant Liam Castle whose outstretched hand guided the ball wide of the goal and at the other end Christie’s free kick was kept out by Gwilliams as he also leapt to push the ball wide.

Sutton pulled one back from the right side of the box as Ryan Pace drilled the ball low past Castle but Barwell responded a minute later to restore the four goal lead through Jamie Towers who drove into the Sutton box and turned the ball neatly across Gwilliams and into the Royals’ net.

A five one victory for Barwell was truly justified as the visitors dominated the game throughout. It was impossible to single out a player for Man of the Match in this team performance so the accolade was awarded to all the Barwell players as they gave their best show in a Barwell shirt for many a match.
