Canaries fall at last hurdle as Rushall grab late winner

Barwell put in a much improved performance after the debacle of the previous Saturday but were dealt a cruel blow in stoppage time to have the match taken from them in the last seconds.

Having gone behind to two quick goals just after half time, Barwell rallied in the last ten minutes and looked to be heading for a draw or better but the persistence of the Pics paid off as they grabbed a winner in the last seconds.

It was the visitors who started the stronger and early efforts from Alex Reid tested Liam Castle as he palmed a ball away from goal.

Eddy Nisevic was then on hand to head away Reid’s cross after he had rounded the home keeper.

Barwell continued to soak up the pressure with Zak Martin and Jake Heath threatening to open the scoring.

The Canaries’ best moments of the half came as Ant Carney had a shot saved by visiting keeper Dean Coleman and soon after Alex Tomkinson received a ball from Richard Lavery and volleyed again to be thwarted by Coleman’s legs.

The second half started poorly for Barwell after a Malachi Lavelle-Moore layoff into the path of Josh Mackenzie gave him the chance to thump the ball into the centre of the net from ten yards.

Rushall doubled their lead within two minutes after a Lavelle-Moore cross was glanced into the goal by the head of Reid.

Barwell had to dig deep to defend the efforts of Rushall for most of the remainder of the match until with ten minutes remaining, an individual effort from Carney saw him round Coleman and shoot into the awaiting net.

Three minutes later Barwell were level. Luke Barlone picked up a loose ball on the right side of the Rushall area and fired home left footed from ten yards.

The home side were on the offensive and could have taken the lead as a Carney cross was heading for Lavery on the far post but the pace of the ball meant it just eluded him.

In the last moments of the match, Barwell were undone as Mackenzie found himself unmarked in the Barwell box and slotted the ball neatly past Castle to secure the points for the Pics.

However, this was a much better performance by the Canaries who responded to the words of Jimmy Ginnelly and are not far from turning the corner and returning to winning ways.
