Matt Thornhill: “I’d like a good cup run.”

Jonny Drake23 Oct 2019 - 16:59

Basford United captain Matt Thornhill spoke to media about Saturday’s 3-1 win over Stafford Rangers and looks ahead to the FA Trophy.

Basford picked up their 6th home win in a row on Saturday thanks to first-half goals from Kane Richards and James Reid and a late one from Liam Hearn. The win extended Basford’s unbeaten run to five games and we closed the gap on league leaders South Shields to five points.

Despite the seemingly convincing score line, Thornhill said it was a difficult game: “It’s always hard when you’re up against teams who are fighting down near the relegation zone”, said the captain, “because they come here and sit back which is very hard to play because all the pressure is on you. You’ve got to create chances by playing good football. I thought they played well first half and we didn’t really get going but second half, they started to tire, and we showed our class to win the game.”

Basford’s fantastic run has given the team huge confidence which Thornhill is hoping will carry them into a successful FA Trophy campaign: “We’ve been playing well this season, but I’d like to get a good cup run as we’ve struggled in the fa cup this year and last. It would be nice to get some cash in for the chairman and give him something back.
