END OF BUILDBASE FA VASE RUN.

END OF BUILDBASE FA VASE RUN.

John Edwards1 Nov 2020 - 12:14

Greenarmy Beaten By Rainworth 3-2

Despite an impressive performance by Richard Hanslow, scoring both of Belper’s
goals, The Greens were unable to prevent a snarling Rainworth side from
progressing into the next round of the FA Vase.
The Boys In Green took on Rainworth Miners Welfare FC today in the 1st round of
the FA Vase at the Kirklington Road Welfare Stadium.
United are chasing their first proper vase run this season, all the players are
optimistic, in the words of Ian the Chairman “A vase run is vital to growing
Belper’s reputation.” Today's game was officiated by Gareth Tye.
The match got off to a worrying start for Belper, after a stagnant first 10 minutes,
Rainworth won a freekick on the left flank, only for the delivery to be headed in
by a grateful Khyle Sargent to give The Wrens the lead. The game took a while to
pick up the pace, likely due to both teams having played twice already in the
league, players will be used to each other now and the tie will be decided by
work-ethic rather than playstyle.
Following a promising spell of play from The Greens, they started to mount the
pressure on the leaders, Curtis Williamson winning a handful of freekicks and
Strez pushing the team progressively further up the pitch. Belper’s determination
would pay off in the end as Williamson found himself involved amongst the goals
again this campaign, beating the offside trap and squaring the ball to Richard
Hanslow, who slotted the ball past a helpless Squires in the Rainworth goal.
Both teams fought to gain control of the match as they found themselves level,
Tyson, Allen and Smyth for Belper were all booked in the last 15 minutes of the
first half, an example of the physicality and desire surrounding this important FA
Vase tie.
The second half began and within 10 minutes Belper found themselves behind,
Ryan Herbert winning a penalty for Rainworth; Ingram putting the ball in the net
after Whittingham saved the initial attempt to make it 2-1. Williamson looked
likelty to save the day again, as he beat the defence for pace and found himself 1
on 1 with the keeper. Elliot Jones pulled him down and was subsequently sent off
to concede a freekick for The Wrens – a lucky escape.
Richard Hanslow was once again a saving grace for The Greens, Bending the ball
past the keeper to equalise in the 73rd minute, after he and Williamson looked too
hot to handle for the Rainworth back 4.
Rainworth had a smaller share of possession in the second half, but took their
chances, their second corner of the game saw them take the lead again, making it
3-2, a delicious delivery saw Kyle Hempshall head home the winner. Green army
dug in and looked for that 3rd equaliser but Rainworth sat deep and saw out the
game. Belper’s 2020/21 FA Vase run comes to an end.
