Back to the Steyne Park fortress for the boys this week as we welcomed an always friendly and competitive Oakfield side.
If we have to put up with another long grass pitch again, Dave has promised he will drive his sit on mower round himself to sort it! A slick dewy surface should allowed some nice passing play but the conditions saw the ball holding up and zapping the boys energy.
A tight start to the game saw us show some good early pressure but the Oakfield keeper was in fine form stopping everything which by and large limited us to long shots. When it looked liked we couldn't buy a gaol Dylan W popped up once again as he often does finishing well after a trademark mazy run to send us 1 up as we went in at half time.
Matthew was playing in a more forward role and he caused problems in the midfield and defended well with Lewis tucking in behind in a more defensive role who seemed to win everything having the game of his life to set us on the attack. But that willingness to get forward saw us get caught on the break with Oakfield levelling the game 1-1.
But the heads did not drop and we looked to get the ball out wide to deliver the ball into the danger area rather than shooting from distance which was still not troubling the impressive Oakfield keeper. That play eventually undid them and a lovely ball in from Dylan W found Elliot who latched onto the cross who slotted the ball home with an instinctive strikers poachers goal neatly into the bottom corner. We were back in front, the crowd went wild and Elliot's Dad nearly exploded with delight witnessing his son net his first competitive goal for the mighty BYFC!
Oakfield hadn't not come roll over and make the game easy for us and their forwards continued to cause us problems as the defence soaked up the pressure as they pushed for yet another equaliser. But that allowed us to hit them on the break and more chances came with one falling to George from distance who struck left footed to hit the top corner with the Oakfiled keeper only managing to get fingertips to it to make it 3-1.
Oakfield's impressive front man with a top knot, plenty of nous and technical ability got his reward by firing in a late Oakfield 2nd which meant that the closing minutes of the game could only be described as "squeaky bum time". But the boys held firm and defended well and moved the ball out away from goal to see the game out for our 3rd successive league win.
A great game to watch on the sidelines no doubt, the respect line was bulging at times and we must mention and thank Graham our ever willing respect steward making sure the excitement was all in the right spirit.
A message to all the supporters this week; thank you, keep it up and keep the support coming, your encouragement will drive the boys on.
MOM this week was Lewis; whatever he had for breakfast that morning buy in and buy it in bulk!
Well done boys!
