Bideford vs Frome Town
Southern League Division One South
Saturday 4th January 2020
3:00pm kick off
Sports Ground, Bideford
Following the New Year’s Day set back at Willand, Bideford host high flying Frome Town this Saturday at the Sports Ground in Division One South. Frome, along with league leaders Thatcham, have broken away at the top of the division and have eyes on an immediate return to the Premier Division. The side from Somerset have won their last four in the league and have only suffered two defeats, most recently a surprise reversal at Melksham on Boxing Day. Bideford picked up a much needed win over Barnstaple on Boxing Day but paid the price for a sloppy start at Willand meaning 2020 began with another away defeat. The Robins will be hoping their home form can continue to help them pull away from danger at the foot of the division.

A Brief History of Frome Town FC
Frome Town were formed in 1904 and began playing locally in the Wiltshire League winning the league title in 1909/10. They were also crowned Somerset Senior League champions on three occasions between 1906 and 1911. Frome joined Western League Division Two in 1919/20 and won the league title in their first season but remained in the division. After World War Two they joined Western League Division One but were relegated back to Division Two after one season. The Robins finished as runners-up in 1954/55 to secure promotion to Division One where they survived for four years before relegation back to Division One and a season later dropping out of the league to join the Wiltshire League. The club returned to the Western League in 1963 in the top flight and remained there for 33 years, winning their only Western League championship in 1978/79. Relegation in 1996 meant six years in Division One before returning to the Premier Division in 2002 as Division One winners. Frome were Premier Division runners-up in 2008/09 and gained promotion to the Southern League for the first time. The Robins finished 4th in their second season in Division One South & West and secured promotion to the Premier Division by beating Sholing in the Play-Off Final. Frome spent eight seasons in the Southern League Premier Division with a club best finish of 8th in 2016/17 before relegation back to Division One South in 2018/19.
