Birkmyre senior team had another hard day last Saturday away to Bishopton. With only 15 players, it was going to be a tough ask for "the myre" lads to get a vital win to keep promotion hopes alive.
In the opening 10 mins, Bishopton managed to get the first score. It wasn't easy and Bishopton had to go through a number of phases before Birkmyre ran out of defenders to stop the try. Conversion added (7-0). Then shortly later the Bishopton pack went through phases, allowing their backs to switch sides to attack and score in the corner (12-0).
Birkmyre mounted a come back & after scrappy play in their own 22 the ball made it wide as James Toal, Jamie Haran and Captain Ross Moglia to produce a bit of support play magic which ended with Toal scoring under the posts. Player/coach Williams added extras (12-7).
As the half progressed. both teams were in each others 22 hoping to get the next vital score. However, after a few conceded penalties and a few quick taps, Bishopton found the next score by the posts.
HT 19 - 7
Bishopton then got the important try few mins into the 2nd half with quick ball resulting in open space in the corner (24-7)
Birkmyre pounded away to get back into the game. Big carries from Ross Adam, James Toal and Sione Halafihi, helped myre down into the Bishopton 22. A gap open up for prop Liam Campbell to score. Williams added the extras (24-14)
With minutes closing, it could have been anyone's game. However the Birkmyre tank was running close to empty, as Bishopton, after a few counter attacks and phases, saw them once again ran out wide into the corner to seal the deal.
29 - 14 FT
"I couldn't ask for more of an effort. The 14 lads I played along aside poured out their hearts. So proud. We gave Bishopton a hard time and even a few Bishopton players express their respect after the game".
Birkmyre Man of the Match was Sione Halafihi with his dominant defence.
