It was the final home game of the season, and it couldn't have been a much tougher visiting team with Bishopton also in the promotion hunt. The last match between the two clubs was in the bowl cup competition where the bears came out on top.
It was a physical game between the two sides with play ebbing back and forth. However, after a back’s move with some slick passing, Bishopton got the first score in the 10th minute (0-5).
On around the 30 minute mark, after big carries and quick hands and feet, the ball popped out of a ruck inside the Bishopton 22. In a quick snapping move, scrum half Mark Armstrong picked up the ball and burst through a gap to score under the posts. Player / coach Williams added the extras (7-5).
A few injuries and later a yellow card to Birkmyre resulted in a few changes, however the match didn't change that much. Both teams went for the posts for 3 points but failed. Eventually some big carries from multiple players caused the Bishopton defence to give away a penalty. Williams slotted the 3 points (10-5)
The game ultimately unfolded in the final 10 minutes. Bishopton in the promotion hunt, weren't going to stay down. With the bears down to 14 men, they showed their desire by exerting immense pressure in attack on a defence that was a man down. After a quick tap and go, they managed to drive over the line and slotted the conversion. (10-12)
Birkmyre reversed that pressure from kick off, and moments later after big carries from the pack and centre duo, Birkmyre managed get a penalty on the 22m in front of the posts, where Williams kicked the points (13-12).
With a minute to go all the bears had to do was slow and control the game. However, with carries from Ross Adam and Scott Ritchie, quick hands from Alistair Dickson and Martin McLeman then set up a break for Ali Peacock. This established a platform for Armstrong's quick ball play and after some quick feet, Martin McLean broke the defensive line and passed out to centre James Toal, who dashed for the corner to seal the game. Williams added the extras from the touchline after the clock had gone red, resulting in Bishopton missing out a losing bonus point.
Final score : Birkmyre 20 - 12 Bishopton
It was a great game and performances from both teams. Scott Ritchie picked up MOTM for strong carries and work rate around the park. The entire Birkmyre squad put in a hard shift keeping their promotion hunt alive.
Next game is away to Waysiders, who have been putting in some big results recently. Please show your support for the team and come along.
