Birkmyre had to travel to Oban to take on a newly reformed Mid Argyll RFC. It had been 10 years since Mid Argyll last played a competitive league game.
The first score came in just under 10 minutes from a quick tap and go. The was the returning Jamie Muir, who only landed in Scotland the day before, who powered over the line. Conversation missed (0-5)
Mid Argyll tried to power through with their bulk, but fly half David Cruickshank saw an opportunity to launch the ball into the Argyll half. A big chase from full back Paul Carruth saw him manage to win a turn over. The ball was then moved wide to open space to allow debutant scrum half Tom McGeoch score in the corner. (0-10)
Some quick thinking and reaction allowed the next couple of scores for Birkmyre. First a no. 8 pick up by Findlay Davidson, drew in the defence allowing the supporting David Cruickshank to dance down the touch line then under the posts. He also converted the extras with a drop goal due to the slow arrival of the kicking tee (0-17).
Then a stolen line out in the Argyll 22 area saw us ship the ball out wide to winger Ross Mcdonnell for his try. Conversion added (0-24).
Finally before half time, Birkmyre won a penalty just in their half. Cruickshank shaped to kick to touch but had marshalled the backs into line. He took a quick tap and sent the backs in the opposite direction. This allowed Centre James Toal to draw in defenders and send centre partner at the time, Craig Williams, dash for the line from 50m out. (0-31)
In the second half it was Mid Argyll who got the first score. After bashing through with their powerful pack, they managed to break through to score. (5-31)
Birkmyre responded very quickly. After chopping the big pack of Argyll, they lost shape which allowed a counter ruck from Birkmyre where a simple pick and go by back row saw Robbie Espie score under the posts. (5-38)
Moments later Birkmyre had a 5m attacking scrum in the middle of the park. A simple and powerful no. 8 pick up by Findlay Davidson scored Birkmyre's 7th try. Conversion added again (5-45)
Mid Argyll got the last score. A quick tap and go from their no8 after a few penalties, saw Birkmyre napping and they drove over the line.
Final score Mid Argyll 10 - 45 Birkmyre. The referee reported 10-43 to SRU which we will hopefully amend
MOTM - Finlay Davidson. He showed not only his pace and power with the ball, but he also put in some big tackles and manage to steal important turnovers.
Also we had 4 league debuts in Owen Nicholas, Alex McKay, Lewis Higgins and Tom McGeoch
Next game is our first home game to Hyndland.
