Match report

Tonight saw Wrens represent the West Lancashire League in the semi-final of the Jeff Walton Trophy against a representative side from the Cheshire League on a night where the bad weather was going to play some part in the proceedings. The winners of the tie will play Liverpool in the final at a venue and date to be decided. The tie was an exciting tie despite there being only 3 goals and tempered by an unfortunate accident just before half time.

Both sides started well with the game being end to end as both sides looked to gain the upper hand though Alex Cameron in the Wrens goal had slightly more to do. It was the home side though who made the breakthrough as Chris Glynn put Wrens 1 - 0 up on 27 minutes. Wrens then had their best period with a second goal ruled out for offside on 34 minutes. Cheshire refused to lie down and continued to probe the Wrens defence that held firm. The home side relied on breaks to create their own chances none of which were converted. Just before half time as Cheshire attacked one of their players injured his leg and had to be taken to hospital. The match was held up for a significant period of time but was finally restated and the half finished with Wrens 1 - 0 up.

As the 2nd half started Cheshire seized the initiative and equalised on 46 minutes. Wrens refused to lie down and regained the lead on 50 minutes through Max Landless. Cheshire upped their game and put pressure on the Wrens goal in search of another equaliser thought the home side created enough chances of their own as substitute Joe Booth hit the post and Max Landless went close to getting his 2nd of the match. Cheshire continued to apply pressure as the match entered its final few minutes and the Wrens defence had to dig deep to keep out the onslaught. As the match entered stoppage time Nick Greenall was sent off putting extra pressure on the home side. As the final whistle blew there was relief all round as Wrens booked their place in yet another cup final albeit as representatives of the West Lancashire League.

Wrens return league action on Saturday with a trip to Tempest Utd. with a 3pm kick off.
