Tonight saw Wrens make their second successive Lancashire Shield final after a 1 - 0 victory against Tempest Utd. In a match should have had more goals as both sides created chance after chance throughout the entire 90 minutes.
Wrens started the match well as Nick Greenall put them 1 - 0 up inside the 1st minute. The optimism that more goals were on the way as Wrens thought they’d made it 2 - 0 on 12 minutes only to have it ruled out for offside. As Wrens maintained their pressure on the opposition goal Tempest found themselves restricted to the occasional counter attack. The Wrens supporters were totally frustrated as the half time whistle went with the score line still at 1 - 0 knowing that more goals were needed to make the game safe.
The 2nd half went the same way as the 1st as chances were missed by both sides. As the half wore on Tempest grew in confidence thinking that if they could get an equaliser they could go on and win the match. The final few minutes saw both sides trading chances with neither side able to convert them frustration was growing as to why the score remained at 1 - 0. As the final whistle went there was relief all round as Wrens made it to the final for the 2nd season in a row. We now await the winner of the 2nd semi-final between Garstang and Burscough Richmond in 2 weeks’ time.
On Saturday Wrens travel to Southport Hesketh with a 3pm kick off.
