Match report

Tonight saw Wrens 2nd attempt to lift some silverware as they took on Garstang in the final of the Richardson Cup at the County Ground Leyland.

Garstang started the match the stronger knowing that the Richardson Cup was their only chance of silverware this season and it took Wrens some time to get the measure of a good Garstang side determined to deny us the trophy. Wrens finally worked their way back into the match creating chances of their own and on 23 minutes Danny Morris scored the first goal of the game giving Wrens a crucial 1 - 0 lead. The remaining 22 minutes of the half saw both sides battle for the next goal which would decide the outcome of a keenly fought final in which neither side had total control of the game. At half time it was Wrens who had the upper hand with a 1 - 0 lead.

The 2nd period started with the game just as competitive with both sides going out for the win and the longer the game remained at 1 - 0 Wrens could not relax as Garstang gave it their all to get back on level terms and a combination of good goalkeeping and the woodwork saw Wrens maintain their lead. Every time that Garstang tried to get back on level terms, Wrens replied with chances of their own only to see the Garstang defence deny them the vital 2nd goal. The match was finally settled on 82 minutes as Danny Morris gave Wrens the cushion of a 2 - 0 lead. The remaining 10 minutes saw Wrens deny Garstang a way back into the tie and after the disappointment of the Lancashire Shield final there was scenes of celebrations as the final whistle blew.

Saturday sees Wrens entertain Longridge Town in the championship decider at School Rd. with a 3pm kick off.
