Match Report: Ravenshead 1-4 Blidworth Welfare

Blidworth were able to make a successful start to their run of pre-season fixtures as Lewis Saxby's new look side were able to come away as comfortable victors against Notts Senior League side Ravenshead FC. First half strikes from Lewis Weaver, Aidy Harris and Cameron Davidson gave the visitors a 3-1 half time lead before Josh Brentnall's long range strike rounded things off late on.

With a lot of players having only trained together for a couple of weeks, you'd have been forgiven if you thought Blidworth would take a while to gel and make an impact in the game. It actually only took them six minutes before they opened the scoring. Striker Lewis Weaver was able to use his searing pace to meet a ball through the middle before showing his composure to race round the keeper before slotting it in the net.

The Blue's first chance fell to their number 8 when the side was awarded a free kick on the edge of Blidworth's box after 13 minutes. The eventual shot evaded the wall but could only curl straight over the net.

The rustiness that comes with the early stages of pre-season reared its head in the 23rd minute as Ravenshead got themselves an equaliser. A pass across the middle to centre back Matt Peberday was intercepted by the quick reacting home side's number 12 who was then able to continue his run before firing into Micheal Ball's goal.

The sides were only level for three minutes as Blidworth soon re-took the lead. Matt Day showed great vision to spray a cross-field, driven pass into the path of Aidy Harris at the back of the box on the opposite side. The attacker was able to bring the ball down before placing it in the far corner.

Blidworth's pace and ability to get in behind the back line continued to threaten the scoreline. Lewis Weaver was able to speed through on a number of occasions with the outracing goalkeeper only beating him to the ball by the narrowest of margins.

Just before the break the team in red were able to extend their lead further through Cameron Davidson. The move started when Jason Dawson was able to outmuscle his marker to bring the ball down and thread it through to Aaron Pride on the left side. The midfielder drove into the box before releasing a curling shot which the keeper could only tip into the path of Davidson in the middle, who happily tapped the ball home.

With a number of changes taking place at the break, the second half was a less cohesive effort from both sides with chances being harder to come by. Defender Jonathan Jenkinson was able to roam forward with the ball just after the hour mark, he danced through a couple of challenges but could only produce a weak final shot at goal which was comfortably collected.

Goalkeeper Michael Ball was forced to work hard in the 69th minute as Ravenshead's number 11 blasted a hard shot which looked destined for the top corner. Fortunately the shot stopper was able to dive at full stretch to tip the ball past the post.

Less than a minute later, Blidworth were able to wrap the competitive tie up. Substitute Joshua Brentnall was given room to turn on the ball before darting towards goal. After seeing a similar chance fly over minutes earlier, the attacker made no mistake with his second chance as he rocketed the ball home from well outside the area.

Once the game was finished, thoughts were already looking towards the next game and another opportunity for the players to get to grips with the attacking, fast paced style that the club is looking to play. Blidworth are back in action on Thursday when they host Heanor Town in a 7:45pm kick off.
