Match Report: Boldon CA 5-2 Winlaton Vulcans

Gavin Henderson5 Dec 2020 - 16:35

Boldon's first game back after lockdown ended with a win in the Durham Trophy over Northern Alliance side Winlaton Vulcans

Boldon came from two-nil down to secure a big win in the Durham Trophy over Northern Alliance side Winlaton Vulcans this afternoon.

Two goals apiece from Levi Collins and Jonny Wightman plus an own goal from a Wightman cross settled what was an incredibly entertaining tie that could have gone a lot differently had the visitors taken their chances.

The game started in the worst possible fashion for Boldon, going behind through an early goal after being cut open by Winlaton's pacy attack.

The second came on 14 minutes, with the away team doubling their lead after another mix up at the back. Whilst Boldon persevered, it was the away team who looked most threatening in those early stages. They were given a penalty after a foul in the box by Steven Graham, but a great save by Andy Hunter in the Boldon goal denied Vulcans a third.

It was after that penalty that Boldon began to knuckle down and get themselves into the game, and a superb solo effort from top scorer Levi Collins halved Winlaton's lead.

Some superb saves from Hunter again denied Winlaton from scoring another, and that allowed Boldon to build going forward and get themselves level, with a melee in the box resulting in Jonny Wightman stabbing home from close range just before half time.

Boldon emerged in the second half brighter, but Winlaton still pushed and had a number of chances that they really should have taken. Hunter in the Boldon goal was again at hand to deny them from re-taking the lead, and in truth his teammates had him to thank for keeping the away side at bay.

The introduction of Frankie Hucks up top with twenty minutes left on the clock changed the flow of the game, and Boldon took advantage of some tired legs to finish the tie with a flurry of goals.

It wasn't all plain sailing though, and after being brought down in the box, Levi Collins saw his penalty saved well by the Winlaton goalie in the 76th minute.

Boldon won a corner from the save, and after playing a one-two, Jonny Wightman turned and finished powerfully to put Boldon ahead for the first time with 14 minutes to spare.

Just a minute later, Boldon got their fourth. A lovely centred pass found Levi Collins, who raced through on goal before lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper - his 36th goal of the season.

Our fifth game with a minute of normal time to spare - again, more good work by Wightman on the left hand side saw a cross deflect in off a Winlaton defender to put the game to bed.

Considering they could and should have been 3-0 down early in the game, Boldon did well to end up winning 5-2, and have their goalkeeper and prolific forwards to thank. It's a good win, and we progress in the cup, but now don't play again until the 15th December as all league action has been suspended until the New Year.
