The U16s started their NLD Cup campaign in magnificent fashion with a dominant performance against Grimsby on Sunday. There were some nerves going into the game as Boston had struggled to compete against Grimsby’s physicality and tough pack in recent years but any concerns were put to bed as the home side found themselves 26-0 up within the first fifteen minutes!
The message from the coaches in recent weeks had been to play with more ambition and the players certainly showed they had taken that on board. With strong running lines, great support, speed to the breakdown and some beautiful off-loading they didn’t let the Grimsby players settle into their game. The dominance was such they had notched up five tries and four conversions before their opponents got their first points on the board on the half an hour and there was still time for another try to bring up 40 points before the half concluded.
The second half started with Grimsby showing more purpose but after a stalemate for the first 10 minutes Boston scored two quick tries to allay any fears that the visitors would start to chew away at their lead. Before the final whistle each team scored another two tries apiece to leave the score at the end at 64-15 to Boston.
Next up in the Cup competition will be Lincoln in four weeks time. After this performance and two close games between the sides last season an exciting match is in prospect!
MOTM: The quality and determination shown by all 20 players who took to the field for Boston on Sunday was such that the coaches did not think it would be fair for an individual to be singled out, however honourable mentions must go the five try scorers:
Raimonds showed alertness to get onto a booming cross-field kick in the first minute for the first try; Finley scored with a brave dive through a pile of bodies for the second game in succession; Dylan ran with strength and purpose to get a try in each half; and Angus and Tom M respectively bagged hatricks in the first and second half. In addition Ollie added 14 points with nerveless kicking off the tee.
Well done all! ?????
