St Dogmaels 1-4 Brecon Corries
The Corries cruised into the Emrys Morgan Cup Quarter Final with an accomplished win over St Dogmaels. With St Dogmaels unbeaten and sitting top of the Ceredigion Costcutter League Division 1, and the Corries missing 5 key players, this was billed as one of the toughest games of the season so far for the high-flying Corries.
The Corries opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a goal from Steven Potter and looked to set the Corries on their way. But almost immediately the home team equalised with only the 4th goal the Corries have conceded all season. Intent on trying to disrupt the Corries, St Dogmaels implemented a physical game plan on a testing playing surface, but they’d not done their homework on the team that is “taking the football world by storm” (Daily Star, 15th Nov 2019). The Corries are no strangers to competing against very competitive and physical teams over the years, so were easily capable of handling the Ceredigion side, and 2 goals in quick succession on 30 minutes, by Matty Roderick and Paul Keddle, saw the Corries comfortable at halftime.
With the severe slope in the Corries’ favour for the 2nd half, it was all about controlling the game and seeing out the win. St Dogmaels made this job even easier when they were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to go, and just minutes later things got worse for them when they gifted the Corries a penalty, which Corries Captain, Dale Evans, dispatched confidently to seal the 1-4 win and name in the hat for the Quarter Final draw.
The Corries have now kicked their last ball of 2019 and will kick off 2020 with a CWFA Cup fixture away at Dyffryn Banw on Saturday 4th January. At the midway point of the season the Corries are top of the Mid Wales League (South) and in the Radnor Cup Semi-final, League Cup Quarter-final, Emrys Morgan Cup Quarter-final and CWFA Challenge Cup 3rd Round. 2020 promises to be an exciting year for the Corries.
Everyone at Brecon Corries AFC wishes the people of Brecon and surrounding areas a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
