With a few changes for last week, and a trialist in the squad, it was Brickfield who began the stronger side, with Matthew Cook having the first chance of the game, after playing a 1-2 with Andy Vale, which the Lex keeper saved well with his legs.
Brickie took the lead after 10 minutes, Owen Jones playing in Andy Vale, who timed his run perfectly against the Lex defence ad coolly finished in the far post. Andy Vale was the most dangerous player on the pitch in the first half, and had numerous chances to add to his tally, having a shot from In the box saved, and finishing in the net only to be ruled offside, but Lex held on bravely to only be 1 goal behind at the halfway point.
The Second Half was always going to be a more open affair with chances for both sides, with both sides still returning to full match fitness after 8 months without any competitive football, and early on it was Lex who hit the post after intercepting a loose Brickfield ball and shooting from distance, but it was Brickfield who doubled their lead on 55 minutes, the impressive Dylan Honey playing a long ball up to Aaron White between the Lex defence that Aaron was able to run onto and finish inside the area.
Andy Vale still wasn’t finished though, and seemed to want his second more than his first, as he twice, just minutes apart had on target shots blocked from the Lex defence.
As the game opened more chances were coming, and a quick counter attack from a Lex corner saw Jimmy Hill play up to Andy Vale, who squared for Hill and then to Aaron White who shot at the keeper, before Brickfield won a penalty on 77 minutes which Aaron White slotted right in the bottom corner.
On 87 minutes it was four, as Centre Back Chris Dixon rose highest from a Brickfield corner to head home, but Lex also weren’t done, as firstly Chris Dixon made a last ditch challenge, then Matt Cook made a toe deflection to stop Lex being able to get a consolation late on.
A good workout and another good game as the team gets to grips with the plans for the new season.
Sunday will see another Brickfield senior team take on a Lex side featuring mainly their under 19’s.
