Belters for Broughton and Women return to Wardie

Belters for Broughton and Women return to Wardie

Mark Brown25 Oct - 16:08

It’s another bumper weekend for Broughton with the Men on the road & our Women’s team making a long-awaited return to Wardie.

Saturday sees our Men’s team make the cross-boundary trip East where they face Ross High.

Whilst the sides may have gone head to head eighteen times, Broughton’s inaugural season saw two matches played against Tranent. The first ended in a 3-3 draw in East Lothian whilst it was a 20-0 win at Wardie for Broughton in the return fixture.

A friendly in 1991 saw the first game against Ross High however it wasn’t until 2007 before the teams locked horns in competitive combat in East League 1.

Restructuring of leagues saw the sides in a newly created East 3 in 2014/15 and both clubs were to be promoted, the Belters as Champions. They made it back-to-back promotions the following season and in 2022-23 they enjoyed a brief fling with National 4.

It’s been nip and tuck between the sides over the last ten outings, with both having secured five wins so it’s all to play for come 3pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, it’s a welcome return back home for our Women’s team after four games on the road.

Visitors to Wardie for the latest League encounter are Strathmore. The weather put paid to both sides getting game time last week as they enter into the second round of fixtures in the East 1 campaign.

Last time out between the Clubs, Broughton ran in eleven tries in a 10-73 win that maintained their 100% record against the Forfar side.

The tourists will head to North Edinburgh keen to avenge that scoreline and bounceback from their defeat to league leaders Dundee in their last outing.

For Broughton, they will be keen to pick up maximum points to keep the pressure on at the business end ahead of next weekend’s top of the table clash against Dundee. Kick-off is 2pm.
