First up, its back to back at home for our Men’s side who welcome Murrayfield Wanderers to Wardie in East Region 1.
Broughton head into the game on a six game winning run, their longest spell since they won the East 2 title back in 2016/17 and they’ll be keen to build on a positive start. For the visitors, its been a contrasting start to the campaign for Wanderers who will be keen to kick-start their season in a bid to return to National League 4 at the first time of asking.
It’s the first time the two Clubs have actually met in a competitive fixture. In 1997 Edinburgh Wanderers merged with Murrayfield RFC and made their National League 2 debut against Howe of Fife. They almost didn’t after the Ref’s car broke down at Grangemouth and a friendly Fifer went in search of the stranded whistler to bring him to Cupar! Despite the game kicking off an hour late, Wanderers went on to win 5-21.
Broughton did met Murrayfield eight times over an 18 year period with a sub-optimal return of just one victory. The new entity were to defeat Broughton 33-32 in a pre-season friendly ahead of that league debut with a win shared in the subsequent pair of games against Saturday’s opponent’s 2nd XV.
Kick-off at Wardie is 3.00pm
The aforementioned Cupar is the destination for the Women’s XV on Sunday as they begin the second round of snappily titled Arnold Clark Caledonia/Midlands/East Region 1 fixtures against Howe Harlequins.
It’s the fifth away day on the bounce for a Broughton side who have picked up three wins out of the four road-trips thus far, scoring 222 points in the process as they continue to keep the pressure on at the business end of the table.
Games against Harlequins are typically tough encounters with little to separate the sides historically as the tale of the tape shows, with both teams winning six games each and a draw the outcome the first time they met at Duffus Park.
Sunday’s hosts haven’t been in action for four frustrating weeks though so will be fresh legged as they look to play catch up and it’ll need another big Broughton performance to keep the Fifers at bay.
The teams last locked horns on the opening weekend of the season at Wardie with seven different try scorers (eight if you include Penalty Try who made a rare appearance) in a 62-7 win.
Kick-off 2.00pm.
