Burton Rugby Club have stepped in to help save the Dove Valley Primary School Rugby Event later this month at William Shrewsbury Primary School, where approximately 80 boys and girls from various schools are due to attend. Unfortunately due to a variety of other commitments for some of the teachers involved, the event was in danger of being cancelled due to a lack of an official organiser and a lack of referees. So that's where Burton Rugby Club have come to the rescue with the newly formed community department and the mini junior section working with Burton College, the East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership and the Rugby Football Union to ensure there are enough referees and administrators to make it an event the young players will fully enjoy.
Burton Rugby Club currently run a wide variety of programmes and activities and works with the South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire School Sport Partnerships and the Rugby Football Union to develop after school rugby clubs, holiday camps and already run a series of secondary school competitions. Steve Smith from the Rugby Club said "we already support a wide variety of school competitions through our fantastic voluntary and community delivery programme and so it seemed a shame not to support such a great festival as the Dove Valley Primary Schools Event. We have already had offers from students from Burton College and coaches from the mini / junior section of the club to help referee the event and several club officials will be there to ensure everything runs smoothly. We will also be making the offer to support this festival on an annual basis to ensure the hard work undertaken by the teachers and parents is part of our wider commitment to our rugby community.
The rugby club currently runs programmes and activities for 5 year olds to a veterans team, for people of all abilities. For further information or if you are interested in joining the club please contact Steve Smith on 07811 209944.
