Camborne threw everything at Redruth after going 12 points behind inside the 1st quarter but came up short to see the Roddas Cup returning to their old rivals in front of a crowd of over 1,700 at the Recreation Ground.
Fielding a full strength pack the Reds were particularly well served by props Darren Jacques and Peter Joyce whilst for ‘Town’ backrow men Dave Roberts and Sam Matavesi were magnificent.
Playing down the slope the visitors opened strongly pinning the home side on their own line before No 8 Tom Duncan was driven over for the opening try which Brett Rule did well to convert.
The Cherry & Whites surged upfield from the restart with No 8 Roberts going close to scoring before Redruth cleared their lines. When home scrum half Dean Pascoe saw yellow for an apparent late tackle the visitors punted an 18th minute penalty to the corner with Jacques touching down from the resulting line out catch and drive.
With right wing Rob Floyd looking dangerous the home side attacked again as the interval neared but crucially were unable to capitalise twice when the Redruth defence was stretched.
Late in the 1st half visiting flanker Josh Morgan was the 2nd player to be yellow carded as half time arrived with the score 0-12.
‘Town’ began the 2nd period in style soon gaining a penalty under the posts that David Mankee easily slotted and on 48 minutes the fly half repeated the dose from long range to cut the deficit to only six points.
A superb Floyd touchline burst was only halted by a desperate tackle before the Reds mounted an attack that ended with a close range penalty shot gratefully accepted by fly half Rule.
The Cherry & Whites piled on the pressure for a spell and only a fine last ditch tackle by full back Craig Williams prevented the rampaging Roberts from scoring a try that would have made for a grandstand finish.
Instead the visitors worked their way upfield with their powerful pack mauling flanker Chris Fuca over for a 69th minute try and a 6-20 scoreline.
Late on the home side gained a deserved consolation when a neat blindside move gave replacement wing Alex Ducker space to race clear and dive over in the scoreboard corner.
