Going from strength to strength

Active Veterans thriving at the Recreation Ground

As well as continuing to be the only Club in the Duchy to successfully field three playing XV’s each Saturday throughout the season, Camborne RFC have also got together a thriving Veterans team.

During the last twelve months the ex players have continued their involvement and interest in the game and have been actively raising money for the Club, local charities and to help finance regular touring fixtures.

Players of all abilities take to the field and at a recent match with Bolingey Barbarians when a substantial sum was raised for the Baa Baas nominated charity amongst the ‘Town’ side were Cornwall’s most capped player Tony Cook and cultured centre Paul Gadsdon.

The Cherry & Whites Vets organised a highly successful Players Reunion Day to mark their Ist XVs’ return to South West One at the opening game of the season when Avonmouth Old Boys were the visitors which raised in excess of £700 for Club funds.

Local charities have also benefited and a concert featuring local ska band Rudi’s Message held during August went down a storm and raised £500 donated to Cornwall Hospice Care.

After a successful weekend in Reading during April 2009 when the home Veterans sustained a rare defeat the Camborne RFC boys will be heading overseas in the New Year when they tour Ireland.

The team will play a 15 a side match against a local Club side and also take part in the Kinsale Sevens in May 2011 and is looking for local companies to sponsor the playing strip and tour clothing. Interested parties requiring further details can contact Trevor Harris the Cherry & Whites Clubhouse Manager on 01209 712684.

The next move for the Veterans is likely to be to establish a formal Cherry & Whites ex players association which will levy a small annual subscription to help fund youth rugby at the Rec.
