Canton RFC Choir
The choir was formed over 20 years ago by a restless group of former rugby players, who decided that whilst their playing days were over, that was not a reason for them to forego the enjoyment of the ‘Après Rugby’ singing.
They were indeed fortunate that within the club they had Monica Roblin, B.Mus.Hons. L.T.C.L., who was not only an outstanding pianist but possessed the necessary experience and expertise to become their Musical Director. With the aid of Deputy Conductor, John ‘Benner’ Donovan(deceased) she transformed the aspiring bar singers into a fine disciplined choir of some standing, having sung at many prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and the Brangwyn Hall.
The aims of the choir are charitable, having raised many thousands of pounds for established charities and local good causes, by performing throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. To support its charitable activities, the choir undertakes a limited number of private engagements, including Weddings, Celebratory Dinners and Club Functions, offering an extensive and varied repertoire, which encompasses traditional Welsh Hymns, Opera, Songs from the Musicals, Popular Music etc.
Choir rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening at the clubhouse at 8.00pm and are open to the public. who are most welcome. It is also a fine opportunity for prospective choristers to experience the workings of the choir, in a relaxed and informal manner, while perhaps enjoying the ‘cup that cheers’.
