What to expect ...
On Thursday the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August, Cardiff Lions RFC will be hosting 'Open Sessions’ for new players to come along and train with the team. These sessions are open to players of ALL abilities. At the Lions we pride ourselves on our diversity in players, specifically their rugby/sporting abilities, which may range from completely new, to seasoned Welsh divisional league players.
We manage our players abilities and development through placement into our 1st XV and 2nd XV; with the latter being more focused on player development. Therefore, our ‘Open Sessions’ will help us determine your rugby background and abilities and appropriately manage you into an environment which suits you.
The focus of these sessions is primarily to have fun with some basic rugby drills and exercise. Sessions will start from 7:30pm to 9pm and afterwards we will reconvene for a drink at the local pub.
We hope to see you at one of our open or even regular training sessions in August. If you have ANY queries, please don’t hesitate to DM us on our:

Who we are?
Cardiff Lions RFC are Wales’ first gay-inclusive rugby team. We currently operate a 1st XV and 2nd XV which caters to wide variety of players: including gay, straight and queer players. As an inclusive community sports club, our objective is to create a safe environment where players can socialise and feel free to be themselves. We are currently based at the Diamond Ground in Cardiff (CF14 3JN) and train twice a week from 7:30pm to 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
1st XV:
Our first team play within the South-East IGR League; of which, we are back-to-back winners (19/20 and 21/22 seasons). Last year saw our first team go to new heights, winning the IGR South League in the UK IGR Semi Finals, and then going on to become UK IGR Champions in the Final. As part of the IGR league, there are regular opportunities to travel and play rugby across the UK; with next seasons destinations including Brighton, London, Birmingham and much more. In the 22/23 season, our aim is to go one step further by competing in IGR’s premier European Championship, the Union Cup. Furthermore, for the first time, our 1st XV will be taking part in a local Cardiff Cup, ‘The Ron Lucock Cup’. Our 1st XV, on average, will play two games a month.
2XV:
Last year saw the inception of Cardiff Lions’ first ever 2nd XV. Our 2nd XV in primarily development orientated. Thus, giving new players the opportunity to learn and settle into rugby, whilst also socialising with the larger squad. In their first year, our 2nd XV competed in the development division of IGR South-East League. The team went unbeaten in league games but unfortunately missed out in the final. The 2nd XV will once again play in the development league whilst also playing the occasional friendly game. Therefore, like the 1st XV, the 2nd XV will also get regular opportunities to travel and play rugby across the UK.
