Wales’ first ever gay inclusive rugby team – Cardiff Lions is looking to grow on its successes and recruit new talent to their team.
The new initiative to recruit more players involves an integrated campaign whereby team members will challenge stereotypes regarding gay sportsmen through the core values of the club:
The campaign follows a busy 2016/17 season in which the team competed at the UK Gay & Inclusive Invitational Rugby Championship, Union Cup tournament in Madrid, and hosted its own Rugby Sevens event the Enfys 7s.
The Lions have also recently expanded, welcoming a mixed touch team. This team is open to anybody who wants to play rugby and has allowed the club to cater for the LGBT+ community and its allies. The mixed touch team has welcomed a diverse range of new players to training.
Dan Guy a recent newcomer to the club said “Rugby is a game that anyone can play. It's great to play for an amazing team that I consider myself well and truly part of the family. We look out for each other and there is a thriving social scene within the club, perfect if you’re looking to meet new people. We play across the UK and I had the opportunity to compete in the Union Cup tournament in Madrid which was fantastic”.
The Lions are also keen to promote the social side of Rugby. Outside of the post-match celebrations there are regular get to togethers, perfect for new players who are looking to meet new like-minded people.
Paul Searle, Chairman says “We’re looking for new players of any ability. Rugby is a game enjoyed by all and now we’re making it possible to be played by all. Whether you’re a seasoned player or have never picked up a ball, we encourage a supportive environment where all body types can learn the skills to play”.
The Lions are looking forward to another busy season and have already begun preparation. Training is twice a week (Sunday and Tuesday) and all are welcome. Training is currently held at Sophia Gardens (Sunday 12:00pm - 1.30pm & Tuesday 7:00pm- 9:00pm). We look forward to welcoming new players soon.
