A look ahead to the Senior Cup clash

Wednesday sees an intriguing clash at the Bill Stokeld Stadium when Bingham Town are the visitors in the Nottinghamshire Saturday Senior Cup fourth round. The fixture was drawn as a home tie for Bingham but was reversed due to their lack of floodlights.

A few people have asked why the match is having to be played midweek when “Saturday” is in the competition title. The Notts FA kindly explained that it is simply to distinguish it from competitions for Sunday teams. Furthermore the CFA have neither the powers nor the inclination to insist league fixtures are postponed to accommodate the Senior Cup.

The other question being asked is why allow clubs without floodlights into the competition at all given the problems it can cause. This is a fair point but the CFA's definition of senior football is perhaps broader than in other counties which means that clubs from step one all the way down to step seven are entered into the competition. This season this means ten times winners Notts County have made a long awaited return to the competition and have got off to a winning start defeating AFC Mansfield 3-1 up at Forest Town.

To freshen up the competition Nottingham Forest have accepted an invitation to field an under 23 side. Given they are currently flying high in the Professional Development League with players like Brennan Johnson and Alex Mighten having broken into the first team their presence is sure to reward their opponents with a bumper gate, the first of which is Basford United next week. By agreement both County and Forest have conceded home advantage in the competition although how this works if they draw each other has yet to be explained!

Returning to tomorrow's clash Carlton have received an exemption to this stage. Millers only needed to reach the quarter-finals last season to achieve that but produced some of their best form in a torrid season to reach the final where they lost 3-0 to Basford at Field Mill.

Bingham, on the other hand, have had an impressive run to the fourth round, beating two step six sides. Firstly they won 3-2 away at NCEL Division one side Retford FC, following it up with a 2-1 home win against Clipstone. In the third round they beat fellow step 7 side Ashland Rovers of the CMFL 4-1 at home.

The odds tomorrow heavily favour Millers off the back of a tremendous first half of the season seeing them sixth in the Bet Victor NPL South East with games in hand. Bingham, though, are top of the Notts Senior League with only two defeats all season. For anyone wondering about the standard of the NSL just look at how Dan Brown has settled in at Carlton this season having moved from Bingham's top of the table rivals Southwell City in the close season.

It's sure to be a memorable clash.

Kick-off tomorrow is 7.45pm with admission prices reduced to £5 adults, £3 concessions and £1 for under 16s.
