I have been sadly informed today of the sad passing of club stalwart Bob Crowe at the age of 83. Bob was a well respected figure at Carnforth Rugby Club and well appreciated by all that knew him.
He was of course father to the late Andrew Crowe - Andrew was a feared prop forward for Carnforth in the 80s and 90s before his death at an early age. Once Andrew passed away his father Bob and mother Sandra became heavily involved with the club - Andrews number one playing shirt was retired / the shirt was framed and awarded to Bob and Sandra. They returned the favour over the years with sponsorship of shirts/ matches / trophies - every which way they could.
The Andrew Crowe Memorial Shield was an annual event between Carnforth and a Vale of Lune team - even though the Vale won on numerous occasions - the trophy is currently held by Carnforth. Easter Monday was usually the day of the fixture and healthy crowds always appeared at Powderhouse Lane to witness full bloodied games between the two sides in memory of Andrew. Every year Bob and Sandra would be on the touchline supporting Carnforth and at the end of the game presented the trophy to the winning captain.
The top try scorer trophy within the club is also "The Crowey Cup" - many players have enjoyed receiving the award from Bob and Sandra at the presentation dinner - this trophy is currently held at their house in Andrews memory also. Bob and Sandra attended as many club functions as they could and were always keen supporters of the clubs welfare.
Bob obviously had other hobbies - dogs / racing pigeons as well as his building/contracting work over the years.
Everyone at Carnforth RUFC extends their condolences and sympathies at this heart breaking time and our thoughts are very much with Sandra and the whole family.
Bob - it was a pleasure knowing you Sir and thanks for everything.
