Alice Sage25 Apr 2022 - 18:37

Thornbury 26 Chew Valley 34.

Chew Valley did the necessary with a bonus point win at Thornbury to be crowned champions.
A remarkable achievement and a credit to Steve Worrall and his coaching team and particularly satisfying for flanker Tom Waddington who was part of the first ever coaching session for juniors at Chew Valley on 2nd August 1994
Thornbury kicked off playing down the slope into the wind and had the ball for the first 5 minutes but were more nervous than the visitors making unforced errors.
The lineout was a lottery early on with the blustery easterly
The rub of the green with a loose pass let 14 Mike Johnson in under the post on 10 minutes converted by 10 Jack Pinker. 7-0
Chew Valley made their first visit to the home half after 13 minutes and a clearance from the home posts went dead. Scrum 5. No 8 Alex Cox picked from the base dummied and crossed for a try Fullback Tom Bryan converted 7-7 on 18 minutes.
On 20 minutes centre Jake Wiid had a shot from the halfway line that went wide.
A penalty put to the corner on 25 minutes and a dominant maul gave flanker Matt Wright the touchdown converted by Bryan. 7-14
Thornbury turned down a shot in front to take a lineout and after a prolonged maul and a penalty advantage 13 Mike Gastin crossed in the corner. Pinker converted 14-14 on 32 minutes.
A Bryan probe and ball to centre Charles Shallcross from his own 10 metre line with fellow centre Joe Cowell try time on 35 minutes. Bryan converted 14-21.
The most fluid Thornbury attack faltered with a knock on a minute before the break bit a lineout win and width on the ball with good support put No 8 Jack Hussey in with the last play. Pinker missed the conversion and it was 19.-21 at the break.
Early Chew Valley pressure and a penalty to the corner, the ball won by Dean Brooker at the tail was worked right then left and second row Marc Daly scored the bonus point try in the corner on 43 minutes.
Bryan converted 19.28
A Bryan fumble created pressure close in but the play ended with a maul forced into touch.
The visitors defence was key and a Matt Blacker turnover on halfway on 51 minutes took it to 19-31
Thornbury chose to try and run out of defence but were regularly knocked back as all of the pack fronted up
A 50-22 from Bryan from his 22 was wasted with a squint throw at the lineout on 64 minutes.
Reg Parfitt on for Jonny Eves in the front row secured a lineout on 70 minutes and there was a period when the game was played in the midfield.. A Luke Sparkes turnover on a mistake with the clearance and another Parfitt turnover gave Bryan a shot with 5 minutes to go 19-34.
From the kickoff a Bryan return was spilt but nothing came of the attack.
As the wind got up and fatigue crept in handling errors and little flowing rugby.
A penalty to the corner with the clock in the in the red scrum half Jak Evans fed winger Sam Garnett for a try converted by Pubker Hut that was it 26-34 and Chew Valley are the champions of South West 1 West!
