Des had started playing for Chippenham having moved up from native Penzance in the 1960’s. Des was a gifted player who was comfortable playing at 9 or 10 and took the training session, coaching the teams on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Off the pitch he was a great Clubman and would often be up the club on a Sunday morning helping to clean the clubhouse and changing rooms. The fact is Des was a welcoming face to those who were new to the club and encouraged all to enjoy the playing of the game.

During his time at Chippenham, Des played from the mid 1960’s through to the early 1970’s when he returned to his native Penzance. Des was Club Captain for five consecutive seasons 1968 – 1973, he also played for the Twin Counties, Dorset & Wiltshire. Prior to returning to Penzance, he was honoured to be made a Life Member of Chippenham RFC.

On his return to Penzance, Des continued his playing career with the Penzance Pirates.

Des did make it back to Chippenham RFC, along with his wife Diane for one of the past player reunions. He will be sorely missed by all of those who knew him and had the privilege of playing alongside him for Chippenham RFC.
