Rugby Round-Up - Saturday 8 September

Rugby Round-Up - Saturday 8 September

MATTHEW STEPHEN9 Mar - 10:48

The highs and lows of league rugby in just two weeks. Chippenham need to regroup and finish season strongly

We faced the highs of a 'Nam Slam' the previous Saturday and life was good but with sport, every match presents its own challenges and teams need to rise to them or will fall.

Chippenham are a proud club but sometimes pride does come before a fall and that was the case this Saturday. Little point in looking for someone to blame but two losses dont sit well and this one will hurt. However, respect to all those that pulled on the Chippenham shirt and all those that came out to support and its out of that respect that we produce a Round-Up covering the matches on Saturday.

It started very positively with Chippenham U15 Boys hosting Millfield School U15s in a match on the AGP at 12.45am. What a great advert for the game and Chippenham produced some great Rugby, winning 45-14 against a strong and well-drilled Millfield. This is a fixture thats been held for a few years and its always a pleasure to host them.

Chippenham 1sts were then playing at home and welcomed Trowbridge for a key top-of-the-table match, with Chippenham in 2nd place and Trowbridge in 3rd. The result didnt go as planned and the records show that Chippenham lost 27-35 but there was a whole load more to the match but lets start by congratulating Trowbridge and we look forward to seeing them again in the Bath Combination Cup match. We were lucky to have an independant reporter by the elusive name of FatBear in attendance and we would suggest you have a look at his report which makes for good reading. His final summary reads
'Trowbridge walked off the pitch with an amazing victory, having looked a beaten side as the game approached its final minutes. Chippenham will be wondering how they conceded three times at the death in barely three minutes.'

Chippenham 2nds have been on a recent positive run of results and league survival is was on the card after a convincing win over both Melksham and Combe Down in previous weeks but they headed over to Royal Wootton Bassett 2nds, who sit at the other end of the table and have secured promotion to Level 6 as a result of this match. Congratulations to them on this impressive performance. There are/were only two 2nd XV's in the league and this was the final match between them but it didnt go to plan and the home side were convincing winners 63-28. There are always positives to take from a game and the most important one, Chippenham picked up a valuable try-bonus point which keeps them in 9th place with 2 matches left in the season. The other positive was this was achieved with just 15 brave players on the pitch and no bench at all, which is not great. At one stage Chippenham were down to just 13 fit players but those guys worked tirelessly and played with massive heart throughout but it was a shame they were left in that position. Time to regroup before the final home match of the season against Devizes on the 22nd and then everyone heads to Frome for the final decider...
