Ex-Grimsby Town star gives views on Saturday's 4-0 win

Cleethorpes Town full back Peter Winn has revealed his belief that his team can win the NCEL Premier Division.

A sterling second half performance from Cleethorpes saw them beat Pontefract Collieries 4-0 at Bradley Pitches.

The win means that with seven games remaining Cleethorpes are eight points behind table toppers Handsworth Parramore.

Former Grimsby Town midfielder Caine Winfarrah was on the scoresheet twice and his team mate Danny Trott also scored a brace.

Winn, a former Mariner himself, was quick to praise both after the game: “Danny’s a big strong lad, a very big strong lad so we expect a lot of him and he played very well. The same goes for Caine they both did a very good job.”

Despite the 4-0 scoreline the first half was an evenly matched affair and neither team really looked to be in control but Winn was always confident that he and his teammates were going to come out on top.

“I always expected to win, we worked hard and we battled and I think eventually we wore them (Pontefract) down, we’ve moved the ball about well, got ourselves four goals and it probably should have been more really.”

As you would expect that defender was also very pleased with his team’s clean sheet. “We always look to keep clean sheets, it was Liam Higton’s first game in a while, and he’s come in and done really well. They had three forwards on the pitch and I think that we dealt with them brilliantly.”

Cleethorpes are next in action on Wednesday when bottom of the table Liversedge travel to Bradley Pitches and Winn is confident that the Owls can put together back to back wins.

“We’ll give it our all and try and get as many goals as we can and work hard at the same time and try and make sure that we get the win.”
