An Emson brace secures a place in the next round for the Owls

A historic day capped off with a Nathan Emson double has sealed a place in the next round for Cleethorpes Town who beat NCEL Premier League side 2-0 on their own patch. The Nottinghamshire side was unbeaten at home until today as the Owls outmuscled and out performed them.

Today's line up saw a few changes from Wednesday's win over Hallam in the NCEL League Cup with no less than nine changes to the starting line up. Only Richard Peck and Daniel Grant were the survivors from the cull.

The first chance of the game fell to Tyiesse Nightingale, which from a long ball forward found the striker bearing down on goal but Scott Drury was quick to react to this and managed to smoother the ball.

From the first corner of the game the ball was played short to the edge of the box where it fell to Darren Hanslip who's powerful strike was blocked by the Basford defence. Some strong challenges from Luke Mascall and Darren Hanslip followed and from one of them Basford's Ash Dyce was unfortunately injured and had to be substituted being replaced by Kieren Kenton-Bradshaw.

The next opportunity came just after the quarter hour mark when Jonathan Oglesby out jumped a Basford defender to nod the ball into the path of Nathan Emson who raced clear but could only poke a tame shot wide.

Scott Drury was then called into action with a brilliant save after Tyiesse Nightingale raced onto a lofted through ball but his strike was straight at the Owls keeper. This defensive error to allow him the room to race clear was met with disgust from the goalkeeper, who after clearing the ball let his feelings known to his defenders.

The goal came after 26 minutes when Jonathan Oglesby picked the ball up on the left wing, smashed a lovely cross field ball over to the right wing to Luke Mascall who tricked and twisted his way past the left back to then cross the ball where Brody Robertson was at hand to take aim but his shot rebounded off the post into the path of Nathan Emson who rifled the ball home.

Basford nearly equalised after the restart when a cross from Theo Smith found Tyiesse Nightingale on the edge of the area but his bullet header failed to trouble the keeper.

Basford's Cashel Walters then showed some great skill taking the ball past Lawrence Heward where his cross found the advancing Tyiesse Nightingale but his wild shot ends up in the car park. As the half time whistle blew Marcus Newell' side knew that the first half was something to build upon and that they had to put away the chances that are created.

The second half started just as the first half ended with the Owls pressing high up the pitch and working as a team to get the ball back when they wasn't in possession. This was opitmised when Brody Robertson's cross from the left was missed by a Basford defender and it fell kindly to Nathan Emson who fiend to shoot, deceiving the Basford keeper and rolling the ball home from three yards to send the travelling support into raptures.

This was followed up moments later after great teamwork between Nathan Emson, Brody Robertson and Darren Hanslip who's shot was only inches wide. The only yellow card of the game for Cleethorpes Town came seconds later after a cynical challenge from the skipper.

Nathan Emson thought he had scored his hat trick when he rolled the ball into the net after Marc Cooper had found him in space but this was ruled out for offside.

Basford started to apply pressure with 25 minutes to go and started to push up leaving gaps in their defence. Nathan Emson, Luke Mascall and Marc Cooper all having chances because of this.

Basford's only real chance came when Tyiesse Nightingale spun away from substitute Matthew Oswin inside the box and his shot went inches wide of Scott Drury's upright.

With three additional minutes of time added signaled by the referee the Owls could sense that this was going to be their day. Even Basford's keeper coming up for a last minute corner could not spoil this historic day. As the final whistle blew and the players and the fans celebrated, history had been written by the Owls on their debut in this competition.

News of the next round and the draw will be published as soon as it is released and we are very proud to announce that we are the only North East Lincolnshire representatives left in the competition.

Thoughts now turn back to the league when the Owls entertain local rivals Grimsby Borough on Wednesday night at the Bradley Community Stadium with a 745pm kick-off. Tickets priced at only £4 for adults and £2 for concessions and children.
