Cleethorpes were in hot form recording 7 wins on the bounce before the game whilst their hosts recorded an impressive 8-0 win in their previous outing. From kick off you could see that the hosts were full of energy as they looked to close down every ball in the opening stages that saw Cleethorpes playing into a strong head wind looking to ensure that there were no early chances for the home side.
Cleethorpes gradually gained control from 15 minutes in as Alex Flett began to dominate everything on the field often leaving the Southam midfield standing. Play opened up as both Jonathan Oglesby and Jack Barlow on the flanks caused mayhem for the hosts. Brody Robertson, Marc Cooper and Oglesby all went close before Cleethorpes took the lead as the ball was won in midfield and Robertson ran at the defence before playing in Cooper who saw his initial effort parried by the Southam keeper before picking up the loose ball and stroking the ball into the empty net to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Cleethorpes continued to press and Robertson saw a few chances slip by and then forced a superb save from the Southam keeper who tipped over from close range. Southam by this time had resorted to long balls looking to relieve the constant pressure. One of the balls down the field bypassed the Cleethorpes defence in a rare lapse of concentration but Brad Beattie was on hand to make a fine save to ensure that the Owls went in a goal up, how it was not more will be one of those questions asked at half time in the stands.
At the start of the second half it was Cleethorpes who made their pressure count as Barlow cut in on the far side and fired home after some great build up play. Cleethorpes third came as a ball forward saw Robertson race through to lob the ball delightfully over the advancing keeper.
Southam came back into the game briefly as a free kick into the box saw Southam defender Tom Cooper knock the ball past Beattie as the Cleethorpes defence was static. This clearly lifted the home side and Southam were showing more intent and went close as they shot just wide inside the area.
Cleethorpes duly responded as a break away saw Marc Cooper fire home to make it 4 and effectively kill off the brief Southam renaissance. Cleethorpes made it 5 in the closing minutes as a corner was met by the Owls very own veteran Richard Peck who headed home.
The draw for the next round takes place on Monday 3rd November with the match scheduled to be played on Saturday 22nd November.
