Cleethorpes Town suffered heartache this afternoon as they were dumped out of the FA Cup at the hands of Conference North side North Ferriby United.

The Owls took the lead against the run of play in the 30th minute when Jack Barlow chipped in from long range. However, the visitors hit back two minutes later when Lawrence Heward headed into his own net then just after the break Nathan Jarmen produced a moment of brilliance to settle the tie for the Villagers.

The Owls starting XI remained unchanged following their 3-1 midweek defeat to Worksop Town. Jack Debnam and Matthew Coleman where recalled to the bench in favour of Alex McKenzie which was the only change.

The game started at a tentative pace with both sides initially feeling each other out with not much penetration. The visitors did manage a tame shot on goal after just two minutes but it was easily saved by keeper Brad Beattie.

As Ferriby retained the ball well in the midfield, they began to exploit the Owls defence and they nearly had the ball in the back of the net in the fourth minute when Tom Denton beat his marker and headed against the crossbar.

The pressure kept mounting and once again the Villagers nearly had the ball in the net as a long corner was played to the back post but Adam Bolder’s header was diverted inches wide by an Owls defender.

At the other end, chances for the Owls were kept at a premium and this was evident when Brody Robertson’s long range shot was easily blocked without troubling the keeper.

The Conference North side then mounted a series of attacks. Firstly, in the 10th minute, a good cross by Dan Clayton was met by a header from captain Russell Fry but it was well held by Beattie. Then Jarmen spun and shot from 20 yards out moments later but it went the wrong side of the post for the Villagers as Beattie was static in his goal acting like a spectator.

Beattie was once again called into action just a few minutes later, when Clayton tried a cheeky shot with the outside of his boot but he curled it too much and it went wide of the target.

The Owls were struggling for effective penetration and were reduced to long range shots during the opening 25 minutes and this was obvious when Darren Hanslip saw his long range effort sail over the bar.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring much to the delight of most of the crowd. Clever play from Alex Flett played in Louis Grant who tempted the keeper to rush out. He could only play it straight to Barlow who composed himself and dinked the ball over the keeper and the three retrieving defenders. This sparked scenes of joy as a cup upset seemed to be on the cards once more.

The joy was short lived though as just two minutes later in the 32nd minute, a long ball forward was not dealt with effective as Heward nodded back to his on-rushing keeper but the ball was too powerful and bounced past Beattie into the empt net.

After the goal went in, the game struggled to get going once again and it was not until the stoppage time at the end of the half that the next chance came. Ferriby’s Denton found himself with only Beattie to beat inside the six yard box following a Josh Wilde pinpoint cross but he could only head straight at the keeper.

As the whistle went for the break, both sides knew that this was not over and the game could go either way.

With both sides unchanged at the break, the Owls kicked off the second half but immediately gave the ball away and invited pressure straight away. Inside the opening 90 seconds, the visiting players and fans where up in arms shouting for a penalty as it appeared to them that Richard Peck had brought down Liam King but the referee waved away the appeals as he adjudged that the ball was won fairly.

The Villagers kept the pressure up as Jarmen went close with 51 minutes on the clock, as his lofted cross just crept past the far post. Then King went on a mazy run in the channel but skewed his shot wide of Beatties upright.

Just three minutes later though, Ferriby did have the ball in the back of the net as Jarmen got the better of Beattie as he dropped his should, made a yard of space and leathered the ball past the static keeper.

The Owls made two quick changes bringing on Lee McFarland and Jonathan Oglesby in replacement of Richard Peck and Louis Grant. This change helped the Owls with the assurance of McFarland propping up the back line and Ogelsby on the wing with his injection of pace.

However, it was Ferriby who kept pressing as they looked to extend their lead. Firstly Jarmen saw his header saved in the 63rd minute, then a drilled free kick from the left had to be smartly saved.

The Owls struggled to create any further chances in the closing quarter of the game as the visitors kept the ball well and retained possession all over the field. The Villager did have chances to extend their lead but Beattie was on hand to deny King and Denton twice.

The referee blew for full-time just three minutes into stoppage time to end the Owls run in the FA Cup in their maiden year in the competition. The Owls now move onto Wednesdays game against Pickering which takes place at the Bradley Community Stadium, with a 7:45pm kick-off.

Assistant Manager Matthew Powell said after the game, “The professionalism showed by Ferriby in the last twenty minutes to shut out the game and to prevent the Owls from any chances demonstrated how much of a threat the Owls where in periods. The respect show by both sides was brilliant and it was a great advert for the FA Cup and for non-league football.”
