Cleethorpes Town put in a 5 star performance this afternoon as they ran out 5-1 winners over fellow Lincolnshire side Brigg Town in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. Goals from Brody Robertson, Peter Winn, Marc Cooper, Daniel Trott and Jonathan Oglesby was enough to see Marcus Newell’s men into the next round.
Newell made three changes from their 1-0 defeat last weekend to Nostell Miners Welfare. Caine Winfarrah, Richard Peck and Tim Lowe were all recalled to the squad in replacement of Lawrence Heward, Liam Dickens and Jonathan Oglesby.
The game started off at a frantic pace with Robertson going ever so close after latching onto an Alex Flett through ball but with just the keeper to beat he shot wide of the mark.
Just two minutes later Winn came even closer to breaking the deadlock but found Ryan Ramsden with strong hands in the Brigg goal. He kept the former Scunthorpe United star out with a point blank save after Winn had nicked the ball off Brigg Captain Tom Lee and sprinted clear with only Ramsden to beat.
With the Owls pushing forward a goal was bound to come and it did in the 10th minute through Robertson. A deftly timed chipped through ball from Cooper found strike partner Robertson who had the easiest of tasks to slot home past Ramsden into the far corner.
It should have been 2-0 moments after the restart after a flowing move from the Owls but Winn’s shot was too hard and went sailing over the bar. A better chance emerged four minutes later as Robertson broke free in the channel. He outmuscle Jordan Organ then rounded Ramsden. With the angle tightening he squared the ball to Cooper but he blasted the ball over with the goal gaping.
Brigg struggled to penetrate the Owls back line and should have been punished on several occasions before the half-time whistle came. Winn and Winfarrah saw shots blocked, left-back Luke Mascall saw his trickery go to waste after he bumfuzzled Phil Winn as he shot straight at the keeper. Then Ramsden had to be on guard once more from Winfarrah after Robertson produced a wonderful cross for the former Grimsby Town player but his shot was straight at the keeper.
At the other end the Zebras best chance of the half fell to Sam O’Malley but he tried to lob Jody Barford in the Owls goal but his accuracy was all off as it dribbled well wide of the mark.
With no changes at the break, the teams returned to the field raring to go. With the half just seven minutes old, Brigg managed not only a shot on target, but a goal. Corey Mortimer latched onto a long cross-field ball from Joe Barden. He expertly followed the run of the ball and smashed it beyond Barford sending the hordes of travelling support into raptures.
Almost from the kick off though, the Owls had the ball in the back of the in the form of Winn as he unleashed an unstoppable shot giving the Owls the lead once more.
The match was put beyond doubt just 120 seconds later as Cooper then got his name on the score sheet as he arrowed a low effort into the bottom corner leaving the Owls Ultras singing their hearts out for the remaining 30 minutes.
The Owls made a series of substitutes bringing on Daniel Trott, Heward and Oglesby for Mascall, Robertson and Cooper. This made an almost instant impact as Trott netted just five minutes into his appearance. An unstoppable right-footed strike nestled into the bottom corner from 20 yards out with just 23 minutes left to play.
Oglesby finished off the scoring in the 79th minute when he volleyed home with ease from just inside the area when from a similar position two minutes earlier he could not find the target.
With the minutes ticking down the Owls managed to keep hold of the ball and mustered up a few more chances but nothing of sustenance and the game petered out. The final whistle was blown to a huge cheer from the home support as the Owls booked themselves a date with Clipstone FC in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup on Saturday 29th August, with a 3:00pm kick-off time.
