this season’s FA Vase competition.
Swirling winds and occasional snow storms made conditions difficult for both sides right from the kick off and although the game certainly wasn’t a classic the teams should be commended for producing a keenly fought cup tie.
Striker Marc Cooper shot over for the Owls in the opening exchanges before the officials waved away Cleethorpes penalty appeals as Brody Robertson went down in the penalty area. Both sides came close just moments later as Clee’s Louis Grant saw his effort blocked by the legs of Warwick goalkeeper Conal Dowling before a quick break saw the Owls Miles Fenty produce a similar save to deny Jamie Smith.
Peter Winn’s corner was caught in the wind and had to be tipped over by Dowling before the deadlock was broken in the 18th minute as Tim Lowe headed in from close range after a pinpoint cross by Robertson.
The visitors threatened again as Smith was denied by an excellent Lowe block before Wade Malley hit a snap shot well wide.
Warwick pressed again at the start of the second half as Malley’s curling free kick went just over before Fenty produced a miraculous double save to deny both Jake Brown and Smith.
Cooper hit an effort narrowly wide for the Owls before substitute Jon Oglesby blazed over from six yards out after a great low cross by Alex Flett. Oglesby did get on the scoresheet though to clinch the tie with four minutes remaining as he raced down the left hand side before hitting a sweet shoot past Dowling and into the corner of the net.
The Owls have moved into round 3 of the competition and will find out who their opponents will be when the draw is made on Monday lunchtime. Attention now switches back to the Toolstation Northern Counties East League promotion campaign when the Owls visit Liversedge on Saturday 28th November. Kick off will be at 3pm.
