The Owls were beaten 4-2 by a strong Mariners side on Tuesday night, however the players gave a good account of themselves.
In front of a packed Bradley, the Owls made a bright start and were rewarded in the seventh minute, when a stray back pass from James Berrett put Andy Taylor through on goal who then rounded goalkeeper James McKeown before calmly slotting the ball into the open net.
Almost immediately after that goal, Cleethorpes continued their strong start to the game, as Cooper doubled the lead, after some great work on the right wing by Liam Davis, the ball was sent in to Cooper who volleyed the ball past James McKeown.
The crazy start to the match continued as the Mariners halved the deficit just minutes after Cooper’s goal, as a cross from midfielder Luke Summerfield was headed past Higton by James Berrett.
The Owls continued to create chances during the rest of the first half, forcing Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown into making some good saves and also striking the woodwork shortly after Berrett’s goal.
After the break, mass changes were made by both managers to provide an opportunity for more of the players to gain some fitness.
Grimsby started strongly in the second half and leveled the scoring on the 54th minute, as Jamey Osborne pulled the ball back to the edge of the box, where trialist Harry Cardwell placed the ball into the bottom corner.
Then, on the 71st minute, a moment of brilliance from midfielder Jamey Osborne put the visitors into the lead, as he lobbed goalkeeper Musselwhite from inside his own half.
Grimsby winger Siriki Dembele was looking dangerous throughout the second half, and on the 76th minute, the winger gave the ball to striker Adi Yussuf, who then thumped the ball into the top corner of the net to secure the win for the Mariners.
It was a good workout for both teams and a tough test for the Owls who were up against very strong Grimsby side, however Cleethorpes can be proud of their performance as they gave a good account of themselves on the night.
