Dominant display send Cleethorpes into next round

Lincoln United Reserves 0 – 4 Cleethorpes Town

Cleethorpes Town progressed to the next round of the Challenge Cup with an assured second half display that sealed the game.

In the first half, Cleethorpes created most of the chances and pushed forward as Lincoln were content to try and hit Cleethorpes on the counter attack - but rarely threatened the Cleethorpes goal.

Cleethorpes' early chances saw Jonathan Oglesby have a shot blocked before Jimmy Read picked up the rebound. Read could not get any power on his shot though and it was gathered by Michael Cooke in the Lincoln goal.

Connor Southern then shot over from outside the area and Ricky Belding missed a chance after being set free one on one - he could only put his effort wide of goal.

Oglesby then saw his shot turned over by Cooke. Luke Mascall then found himself free in the area and fired over from inside the area.

The biggest scare for Cleethorpes was when striker Belding went for the ball with Cooke and Belding was injured as both players clashed. That resulted in a eight minute stoppage where Belding had to leave the pitch for further treatment.

He was able to return and an instant impact saw the ball come out to the wing were Belding ran past his marker with ease and his effort hit the post. As the ball went across the line, Oglesby fired the ball into the net to give Cleethorpes a deserved lead at half time.

The second half saw Belding in the box again. He was brought down and a penalty was awarded. Richard Peck stepped up to double the lead.

Cleethorpes now were dominating all areas of the field and keeping the ball well. A run down the left saw Mascall put the ball into the box and his cross evaded Cooke and struck the bar, the rebound falling to Oglesby who again showed his composure to score low into the corner of the goal.

Lincoln meanwhile saw an effort saved by Drury - his first save of the game.

At the other end Sawdon headed wide from a cross from Oglesby, and Oglesby then shot wide after finding space in the area. Mascall fired a low shot that was saved well low down by Cooke.

Sawdon then made it four when a pass in from Robertson allowed him to turn in the area and stroke the ball into the net to make it four.

The game finished with a series of efforts from Robertson who was unable to find the target.

Cleethorpes progressed to the next round and will meet Skegness Town in October who they meet in the league on Tuesday night at Bradley Community Stadium in a 7.45pm kick off.
