Cleethorpes Town ran out comfortable winners on Saturday against Glasshoughton Welfare 3-0 at the Bradley Community Stadium.

Goals from Brody Robertson, Lawrence Heward and a late Nathan Emson goal was enough to see the Owls take all three points.

The Owls made just 1 change to the starting 11 who beat Nostell Miners Welfare 5-1 last time out. Louis Grant came in for the unavailable Marc Cooper for his 14th start of the season.

Watched by a healthy crowd of 139, the game started off at a steady pace with the Owls having most of the early possession. The first chance came with just two minutes on the clock when Jack Barlow floated in a diagonal ball into the box however it just evaded Jonathan Oglesby’s outstretched foot.

Just a few minutes later though and the ball was in the back of the net for the home side. Louis Grant charged down the keeper who could not keep ahold of the ball and tapped the ball home into the empty net. However, the referee had adjudged a foul on the keeper by Louis Grant, therefore ruling the goal out much to the annoyance of the striker.

The visitors struggled to get hold of the ball and when they did, it seemed to be they were attempting to play the ball in behind the Owls stern defence. This nearly paid off with just eight minutes on the clock as Joshua Morley played a delightful ball into the box but Owls shot stopper Brad Beattie was quick to react and raced out to claim the ball.

In the 11th minute, Daniel Grant, playing his 56th game went in search of his first ever goal. He let loose from 25 yards out on the left hand side, just outside the area but his effort could only brush the outside of the post.

Only five minutes later, and the Owls should of scored. Alex Flett, tricked his way past three static Welfare players but his shot was just too weak and easily saved by Archer.

It was just one way traffic as Welfare where content on defending in numbers and throwing bodies in the way of any shot. This was evident as Robertson raced clear in the 19th minute but Adam Walsh raced back just as Robertson was about to pull the trigger and blocked an almost certain goal bound effort.

Three corners in a row was the next main piece of action in the 22nd minute as the Owls pushed on in search of the opener. The first two corners where put out of play by Welfare defenders but the third corner caused mayhem inside the box as the ball pinged around and eventually it fell to Captain Darren Hanslip who saw his shot on goal cleared off the line by a well placed defender.

Just three minutes later and the keeper had to be on guard once more as Hanslip came close to opening the scoring when he was unmarked once again at the back post but the keeper made a brilliant save to prevent the skipper from scoring his sixth goal of the campaign.

It was Alex Flett in the 29th minute that should of opened the scoring as the keeper came rushing out to punch the ball clear but it fell to Flett who’s lob could not beat the back peddling keeper.

Just 60 seconds later the Owls had two chances but squandered both. Firstly Robertson saw his shot blocked after a great move involving Jonathan Oglesby and Jack Barlow and the Oglesby fired an effort just inches over from 30 yards out.

The chances kept coming and it looked as if the half was going to end goalless as Louis Grant, Oglesby and Mascall all went close to breaking the deadlock.

As the clocked ticked down and with just a minute to go in the half, the Owls finally made the breakthrough as Robertson tucked the ball home after great build up play involving Hanslip and Barlow.

The half ended seconds later with the Owls leading by 1-0 thanks to the late Robertson goal.

With no changes at the break, the Owls kicked off the second half and started on the front foot. Heward went close just seconds into the half as Oglesby played a delightful ball to the back post only for Heward to shoot wide of the mark.

At the other end, chances where at a premium for Welfare and as James Dyson shot high and wide it was obvious that this was not going to be there afternoon. There confidence was lifted briefly when Joshua Prudhoe went close as he tried to lob Beattie but it was just too strong and over the bar.

The Owls did extend their lead though just 90 second slater in the 58th minute when Heward nodded the ball home from 12 yards out from an Oglesby cross for his second ever Owls goal.

Manager Marcus Newell made a substitution just moments after the goal bringing on Nathan Emson in replacement of scorer Robertson.

The extra pace up front was evident as just three minutes later Louis Grant and Oglesby both saw shots parried and saved as the Owls looked to extend their lead.

A second substitution was made in the 68th minute as Louis Grant was replaced by Lee McFarland. McFarland was placed in an unfamiliar role as a striker as he has been used an a centre-back so far this season.

In the 71st minute, Daniel Grant then went close once more as he took aim from 25 yards as he beat his marker but it flew the wrong side of the post much to his dismay.

Substitute McFarland should of had the ball in the back of the net with just 17 minutes to go however, following a fantastic bursting run from Daniel Grant, McFarland could not slot the ball home.

Welfare should of pulled a goal back in the 78th minute after Beattie had missed a cross from the right but Ryan O’Reilly could only head wide with the goal at his mercy.

The final few minutes of the game was an end to end affiar with both sides having chances to score. For the visitors O’Reilly and Prudhoe both went close but thanks to some grea keeping from Beattie, the scoreline was kept at 2-0.

At the other end, McFarland attempted an overhead kick but he missed the ball and nearly kicked his marker. Then a wonderfully worked move from the Owls involving Hanslip and Flett meant that Emson had the easiest of chances to slot the ball home and to seal an emphatic 3-0 win for the Owls.
