Cleethorpes Town narrowly beat Garforth Town 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a Jonathan Oglesby strike just after half-time.

The Owls made five changes to the starting line-up from their defeat the previous Saturday bringing in Damien Steer, Kirk Wheeler, Darren Hanslip, Jack Debnam and Jonathan Oglesby in replacement of Brad Beattie, Jack Richardson, Jack Barlow, Marc Cooper and Louis Grant.

The Owls started the match brightly and fashioned a chance as early as the third minute as Garforth's 6ft 7in man mountain of a keeper was rushed into a hurried clearance as Brody Robertson closed the keeper down looking for a mistake.

From the clearance, the ball fell to Mark Simpson where he played in a through ball to Luke Mangham who was just about to pull the trigger but Liam Dickens was on hand to produce a well timed tackle inside the box saving a certain goal.

Just four minutes later and the Miners really should of scored. Mangham latched onto a lofted ball from deep and only had Steer to beat. He rounded the keeper but could only find the side netting from a tight angle much to his annoyance.

At the other end, makeshift striker Wheeler nearly had the ball in the back of the net after a great Owls move but Hunter was on hand to stop the shot.

With the Owls gaining momentum, they pushed forward in search of the opener and should of got it as Oglesby played in a corner kick from the right hand side but Debnam could only head wide of the mark as he rose above his marker at the far post.

Only 30 seconds later, and the Miners where under the cosh once more as Hanslip clipped the ball into Robertson's path but he could only drag his shot wide of Hunter's post.

Further chances fell for the Owls over the next five minute with Debnam, Robertson and Wheeler all wasting good opportunities to open the scoring.

However, Debnam did have the best chance of the game so far for the Owls in the 29th minute as Alex Flett delivered a pinpoint cross which was chested by Robertson in Debnam's path but he could only scuff his shot inches wide.

The relenting pressure from the visitors continued as Debnam saw he lobbed effort cleared off the line by Miners substitute Ashley Preece with his first touch of the ball after coming on for injured Jack McCarthy.

Just five minutes last and it was deja vu once again but it was Oglesby this time who saw he lofted header cleared off the line as he nodded a Flett diagonal ball goalwards but it was Preece once more who came to the rescue of the Miners.

As the clock was running down and half-time approaching the Owls went on ultra-offensive mode and made Hunter work for his place in the Miners side. He produced a marvellous one-handed diving save from a Debnam arrowed strike from 25 yards out that was heading into the top corner but the athleticism of Hunter saved the day. Then Oglesby found time to test the keeper once more before the break but once again the shot stopper was in fine first-half hiding onto the powerful shot well.

The half-time entertainment was provided by two Santas, one from either club competing in a penalty shootout. Thankfully the Owls Santa came away with the plaudits by winning 3-1 thanks to some quality finishing from the North Pole maestro.

The second half started in complete contrast to how the first half went as Garforth came out the stronger side and in their opinion, should of had a penalty after Mascall appeared to have fouled Tim Roberston inside the box but the referee waved away the strong appeals.

The Miners started to move the ball around well in their own half looking for opportunities to open up, however this was there downfall as Debnam won the ball on the right hand side. He bumfuzzled his marker, produced a delightful cross to the back stick where Oglesby was on hand to force the ball home much to the joy of the travelling support.

With confidence high, the Owls went in search of another in the form of Flett but he could only fire over the bar after being set up by Wheeler.

The Owls nearly shot themselves in the foot as they pushed forward as Miners captain Andy Hawksworth snuck forward and broke the offside trap but his lofted effort sailed over the bar much to the relief of the Owls backline.

With the clock running down, Garforth decided to push forward looking for the equaliser when left gaps at the back for the Owls to exploit. This was evident as Dickens played in Debnam who crossed to Oglesby in a similar move to the goal but Oglesby could only head wide of the mark.

Just two minutes later, the Owls where at it again, this time in the form of Mascall and Hanslip as they both tested the keeper within seconds of each other but Hunter stood talk and didn't allow the ball to get past him.

With less than 15 minutes left, the best chance for the Owls to stretch their lead came when Robertson was played through with only the keeper to beat but he spurned the chance and poked wide of the mark with only Hunter to beat.

From the goal kick, the Owls won the ball and retained possession for over two minutes, passing over 40 times in the process in a move similar to Barcelona but the final ball by Robertson could not find Oglesby in an advanced position.

Only two minters later and game changed. Mangham beat Dickens to the ball and was through on goal. Dickens had two choices, bring Mangham down and receive a definite red card or let him through and potentially concede a goal and lose out on two points. He chose the former, brought the striker down and headed off for an early shower. The travelling support showed their appreciation towards Dickens in his selfless act.

From the awarded free-kick, Roberston struck the ball over the wall and clipped the outside of the post from 25 yards out. Dickens must of wondered what had happened as the noise level increased inside the stadium.

With the man advantage, the Miners looked at breaking down the sturdy defence and seemed to have found a way after Mascall was beaten on the near side by Spencer Lund but he could only fire wide after sprinting into the box following his mazy run.

Even with the extra man, the Miners looked vulnerable on the break as substitute Richardson ran 70 yards with the ball, shielded off one opponent, laid it off into the path of Flett who cross to Debnam but he could not find the target with his powerful header.

The clock ticked into injury time and the board went up for an additional six minutes of added time. The best chance for the Miners to draw level fell to Lund after Heward missed a long ball from Hunter but as Steer came rushing out and the angle narrowed Lund's right footed effort could only find the stand behind the goal much to the Owls relief.

The Owls managed to hold out for the further two minutes and recorded another victory over the Miners, their second this season following Octobers 4-1 win at Bradley.
