Cleethorpes Town were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday against a decent Bridlington Town side at the Bradley Community Stadium.

The Owls fell a goal behind after Will Waudby squeezed the ball home only for Jack Richardson to equalised minutes later with a thunderous left footed strike.

The Owls made two changes from their 6-0 loss the weekend before to Heanor Town as Liam Higton made his debut in goal and Kirk Wheeler was recalled to the starting line-up due to the unavailability of Matthew Kingston.

Both sides started the game in a steady fashion with most of the noise coming from the away support, a school mini-bus full of kids. In just the fourth minute, Brody Robertson, playing in his 29th league game thought he was through on goal however the linesman on the near side had adjudged that he was offside.

Just three minutes later, the same move was repeated with the same consequence. This time though, Robertson ran from an onside position past Marc Cooper who was stood offside. Robertson then chipped the keeper and Luke Mascall was on hand to force the ball home. Only then did everyone realise that the linesmen had once again signaled for offside in a contentious decision.

The first shot on target of the game occurred with 14 minutes on the clock as Mascall drilled a 20 yard shot goal wards only to see Bridlington’s James Hitchcock in fine form.

With the Owls in the ascendancy they looked to open the scoring but just couldn’t find the back of the net and this was evident as Jonathan Oglesby chipped just over the bar after a brilliant lay-off by Robertson.

The pressure continued as Robertson hit a shot inch over the bar after a long ball from Alex Flett was chested down by Cooper into the youngster’s path.

At the other end, shots where at a premium for the visitors but did manage a shot on target when Benn Lewis tried his luck but found Higton with strong hands to grasp onto the ball.

Then in the 21st minute the Owls had two chances to score in 30 seconds. Firstly, Mascall saw his effort well saved then as the ball was played back in Robertson broke free and tried to chip the keeper but the ball bounced the wrong side of the post much to his annoyance.

Only 7 minutes later and Mascall was involved again as a fantastic cross-field ball from Jonathan Oglesby was latched onto by Mascall. He sprinted with the ball into the box but his shot from a narrow angle was parried away from danger.

Against the run of play Bridlington scored from a corner. Danny Brunten swung the corner in from the right hand side; it was headed downwards by Lewis to Waudby who stabbed the ball home to give the Seasiders a 1-0 lead.

Things nearly went from bad to worse for the Owls as with their tails up, the Seasiders went in search of extended their lead as Daniel Grant had to clear the ball off the line as Chris Jenkinson’s header was goal-bound following a swirling cross from the right. However Grant was on hand to clear the danger much to the Owls relief.

Only 60 seconds later, Bridlington had two further chances spurned as Lewis Puchers shot was parried by Higton into the path of Chris Adams but he couldn’t squeeze the ball home as Higton managed to hold onto the second shot.

The Seasiders could have had a tighter grip on the game following those clear-cut chances but they where made to pay as the Owls equalised just before the break. Richardson collected a short pass, sprinted past two Bridlington players then arrowed in a low shot from outside the box giving the keeper no chance.

As the half ended, on the balance of play given the late chances for Bridlington, the game being level was the correct scoreline.

With both sides unchanged at the break, the Owls started the half with the better momentum. Mascall played in a long free kick, which was only cleared to Cooper, but he could only shoot over the bar from outside the box.

In only the 48th minute another chance came for the Owls as Richardson made a break forward bumfuzzling his way past two players. He was then fouled but managed to lay the ball off into the path of Mascall who saw his shot well saved by Hitchcock.

With chances being a rarity in the game it was not until just before the hour mark that a half chance was created. Oglesby managed to get in front of his marker inside his own box then his sprinted 50 yards with the ball but his pass to Robertson was just over hit as he looked to play him in for what would of certainly being a goal.

With only 17 minutes to play and legs all over tiring it was Bridlington who nearly snatched the lead but with just the keeper to beat Adams dragged his shot a whisker wide of the upright. Then seconds later, Eddy Birch clipped in the ball to Pucher who took a deft touch but Higton was first to react to dive onto the ball.

As the clock ticked down in the final minutes of the match, chances came at both ends for a winner but nothing was taken. First, Bridlington broke forward 3-on-3 with Jarrod Smalley and Craig Hogg at the heart of the attack. They both took swipes at the ball inside the box but brilliant defending from Daniel Grant saw off the attack.

The home side though, did manage to have one more chance as Cooper lost his marker from a Mascall cross but he could only head wide of the mark in what surely would have been the winner.

The most controversial moment of the game was saved for injury time as Adams danced his way into the box only to go tumbling over in the box. It seemed a clear-cut penalty to those sat in the sands but referee Matt McGrath waved away the appeals much to the disapproval of the travelling contingency. The referee blew his whilst to signal the end of the game moments later as the Owls drew for the first time this season, leaving them in third position in the table, just five points behind leaders Tadcaster Albion.
