.Cleethorpes Town survived a late comeback from Nostell Miners Welfare as they won 5-3 in an enthralling game at the Bradley Community Stadium.

The Owls raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time with Brody Robertson scoring a brace and full debutant Daniel Trott adding to the scoreline. Robertson then finished his hat-trick soon after the break, then unselfishly set up Alex Flett for their fifth. Nostell to their credit fought back well in the last 15 minutes and scored three quick goals but it was all in vein as the Owls saw out the victory.

The Owls went into the game seven points behind leaders Worksop who were playing fourth placed Shaw Lane and two points behind second placed Tadcaster Albion. Marcus Newell made just two changes to the starting line-up from their 1-0 victory 10 days previous against Albion Spots. Jack Richardson and Trott made the starting 11 as Marc Cooper and Jonathan Oglesby where both unavailable. New signing Laurence McKay made the substitutes bench just 24 hours after signing from local rivals Barton Town Old Boys.

With the wind swirling around Bradley the game started at a high tempo with both sides settling into the game well. Winger Luke Mascall tried to open up the Nostell defence with just three minutes on the clock but the wind got a hold of the ball and took it out of the path of Jack Barlow just as he was through on goal.

The visitors should have opened the scoring just a minute later after Steve Wales played in a delicious ball from the right wing to Tony Doran but he couldn’t turn the ball home into the net as he was put under immense pressure by Daniel Grant, which put him off and missed a virtual open goal.

Nostell continued to pile on the pressure and the Owls had to be thankful to keeper Miles Fenty for his athleticism as a long effort from Jack Fisher nearly caught the 25 year old out but he was on hand to tip the shot over for a corner.

The visitors came even closer to opening the scoring when Adam Clayton rattled the crossbar in the eighth minute when Clayton’s arrowed effort came crashing back off the woodwork from 25 yards.

At the other end, chances fell for both Mascall and winger Jack Barlow but Nostell’s keeper Ben Saynor was on hand to keep both efforts on goal out. Just four minutes later though he was beaten for the first time as Trott played a great through ball to Robertson who rounded the advancing keeper and rolled the ball home much to his delight.

It was nearly level from the kick-off as Nostell looked to equalise but Fenty was on hand to deny Rob Bordman this time as he was put through on goal but as the angle narrowed he could only shoot straight at Fenty who made a great block.

With the end to end action it was not long before another goal was scored and it was the Owls who extended their lead. The tireless Trott closed down Saynor and managed to get there ahead of the keeper. He knocked the ball past Saynor and tapped it home for his first Owls goal.

Just three minutes later Nostell struck the woodwork once more. A great flick by Dave Bordman on the wing set up his brother Rob Bordman who saw his powerful shot rebound off the crossbar much to his annoyance.

Chances kept coming for both sides but it was the Owls who where knocking the hardest as Mascall played in a delightful low cross in the 27th minute which just evaded the outstretched Trott with the goal at his mercy. Then Barlow collected the stray ball, bumfuzzled his marker, but as his cross was cleared Jack Richardson came steaming in and riffled his shot just over the bar.

Richardson came even closer with just 10 minutes left of the half as his volleyed inches wide of the mark from just outside the box as the Owls piled on the pressure.

The third goal did eventually come for the Owls but not before Wales should of made it 2-1 to Nostell. Fenty was on hand once more to deny the midfielder as he sprinted clear following a good challenge on Daniel Grant. It was Robertson who gave the Owls a comfortable lead going into the break as he poked the ball home following a corner from the right, which was nodded down, into his path.

With no changes for either side at the break, it was full steam ahead for the Owls as they pressed high up the pitch looking to further enhance their lead and this was rewarded in the 51st minute. Robertson took a long ball from Mascall down beautifully and deftly chipped the on rushing Saynor to complete his fourth hat-trick of the season.

Nostell tried to get back into the game and should have done through Rob Bordman after Wales had beaten his marker but Bordman could not squeeze his shot in from close range as the Owls looked to keep a clean sheet.

Both sides made double substitutions with Nostell changing tactics going more offensive with the Owls going for like-for-like changes bringing off Daniel Grant and Lawrence Heward for Laurence McKay and Matthew Kingston.

The changes seemed to have the desired effect, as just two minutes after the substitutions it was 5-0. Robertson raced clear with just the keeper to beat but he unselfishly squared the ball to Flett who smashed the ball home with ease for his 11th goal of his Owls career.

It was Robertsons’ last action of the game as he was subbed for the returning Louis Grant following an operation three weeks previously.

Grant nearly had an immediate impact as he got ahold of the ball and arrowed his shot goal-bound but Saynor made a brilliant one-handed save to deny the striker a goal on his return.

Nostell however, had their tails up moments later as they found a way back into the game. Fisher snuck in at the back post and headed home a well-delivered Simon Poole cross.

Just five minutes later and it was 5-2 as Rob Bordman had the easiest of chances to score after Wales capitalised on a Dickens mistake to race clear and squared the ball to Bordman.

Rob Bordman was then celebrating once more with six minutes of the match remaining as he drilled home a free-kick from 25 yards into the corner of the net giving Fenty no chance.

With just five minutes left Nostell looked close the scoreline even further but just could not get hold of the ball for long enough to mount any further attacks as the Owls closed out the game in a professional manner. They piled on the pressure winning successive corners and saw the final whistle come seconds after Matthew Thompson nearly put into his own net from a deep cross.

CTFC caught up with Assistant Manager Matthew Powell shortly after the game, “We played very well in patches today and deserved our win. We took our foot off the gas and that cost us but fair play to Nostell for their never say die attitude.”

He added, I must say a big thank you to all the fans that came and watched us today. A crowd of over 200 was brilliant, and I saw plenty of new faces which I hope will return for Wednesday exciting clash with promotion rivals Worksop Town.”
