Cleethorpes Town huffed and they puffed against Thackley but could only manage to salvage a draw thanks to a 76th minute equaliser from Louis Grant.

His 14th goal of the season cancelled out Mike Garrods easiest goal of his career after capitalizing on a mistake by keeper Miles Fenty.

Marcus Newell made four changes to the starting line-up from last Saturdays 5-0 win away at Glasshoughton Welfare. Laurence McKay, Jack Richardson, Daniel Trott and Jonathan Oglesby were all recalled to the starting 11 but the Owls were missing joint top goal scorer Marc Cooper.

The Owls started off on the front foot from the go. Within 90 seconds a chance for Oglesby to open the scoring came from a corner but he could only head inches wide of the far post. This was the scene for most of the first half.

Chances kept coming and going for the hosts as they looked at closing the gap on league leaders Worksop Town. The ball did work its way into the back of the net in the next attack through Brody Robertson but it was disallowed for offside.

Kennedy was next up to try his luck but found the keeper with strong hands, then the clearance fell to Oglesby but he could not hit the target from 40 yards out.

Right-back Luke Mascall, playing his 38th competitive match of the season then saw his bullet header saved following a great cross in by Oglesby. Just two minutes later and their keeper was on hand once more to save the day as Trott first shot straight at the keeper then he had to make a great one handed diving save to prevent Trott at the second attempt.

The Owls came even closer with 12 minutes on the clock as a corner was played in to the back post but Trott’s bundled effort was cleared off the line. Trott should have scored moments later when he found himself with just Edward Hall to beat but he fired over from 6 yards out much to his dismay.

With the Owls growing frustration evident, the attempts on goal lacked purpose. This was evident as in the 23rd minute Kennedy’s daisy cutter was comfortably saved by Hall. Seconds later, Trott found himself with just the keeper to beat but missed the target once more.

Once more, Trott was in the thick of the action but his acrobatic attempt on goal was adjudged to of been offside following a chipped Oglesby through ball.

The first effort on goal from the visitors came in the 40th minute when Tom Dugdale skewed a shot wide of the mark. Their second shot came just two minutes later as Nick McNally capitalised on Richard Peck’s wayward header but once more the shot was off target for Thackley.

Referee Paul Cook blew moments later but not before Thackley had another attempt at scoring but Farrell volleyed wide from a McNally cross.

With no changes at the break the second half began. Much like the first, chances came and went for the Owls. Robertson ran onto a lovely flicked on header by Trott. With only the keeper to beat and the crow up on their feet it looked certain that he would score his 30th of the season. However, he seemed to misjudge his shot as the ball trickled agonisingly wide of the mark.

At the other end, Thackley were coming back into the game and when McNally shot just wide form 25 yards, the Owls knew they must score first. Seconds later, McNally was at it again, this time testing Fenty but his effort from a tight angle was tame after latching onto a long through ball.

Thackley made a change in hope of mixing things up and it nearly made dividend when Farrell missed the target by inches as he attempted to head home an inch perfect cross.

The Owls then had a spell of ten minutes in which several good chances occurred. Kennedy saw an effort tipped around the post by Hall, and then both Oglesby and Flett went close with efforts from just outside the box.

Disaster struck in the 72nd minute though as Fenty came rushing out only to completely miss the ball as he went to clear it which allowed Garrod to race clean through with no one to beat to smash the ball home giving the visitors the lead.

An immediate response was sought and a substitution was made bringing Louis Grant on, it came to immediate fruition. With Grants first touch of he game it was all-square. He tapped home a pinpoint cross from the right to give the Owls hope of all three points.

No matter how much the Owls knocked on the Thackley door though, it was firmly shut as the Owls looked to secure the victory. Although with the hosts pushing forward this left gaps at the back and become exposed with just 12 minutes left but Fenty was on hand to deny Farrell.

With the game just about to enter injury time, Jack Barlow, a 78th minute substitute though he had won the game but Hall was on hand to deny the former Hull City winger with a one-handed superb save. From the resulting corner, Charlie Barker denied the Owls once more as Dickens saw his header bundled off the line. In the second minute of added time, Hall fumbled a long cross, and the ball pinged around the box for what seemed an eternity but it was eventually thumped clear with the ball just one yard out.

Fenty made up for his earlier error deep into added time as in the 95th minute, Thackley broke and Joe Brown squared the ball to Farrell but with just Fenty to beat the keeper came out on top of preserve the draw.

The point for the Owls leaves them six points adrift of Worksop Town having now played the same amount of games. The Owls face Barton Town Old Boys next Friday with an 11:30am kick-off time.
