Brody Robertson scored the only goal of the game just five minutes after Daniel Trott was sent for an early bath.
Marcus Newell was forced to made one change from Tuesday’s 3-0 win away at Nostell Miners Welfare. Jack Richardson was injured during the warm-up and was replaced by Daniel Trott.
It was the hosts who made the better start to the game as Luke McCrum’s corner from the left was headed inches wide by Greg Kidd.
Just a couple of minutes later at the other end, Liam Dickens did well to hold off Spencer Lund. Dickens then laid the ball off into the path of Luke Mascall who’s left footed drive was parried over the bar by Tom Osbourne.
The Owls came even closer to scoring in the 14th minute when Marc Coopers reverse pass found Trott on the right. He skipped past his marker and his high cross found Robertson but he could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
Owl’s keeper Miles Fenty then had to be on hand to deny Harry McMillian from 14 yards out, as his header was goal bound but Fenty was more than equal to it.
Seconds later Fenty had to think quickly once more as Kieran Wressell sliced a clearance inside his own box straight at Fenty. Had he not reacted quickly, it certainly would have been a goal.
The best chance of the first half fell to McMillian who charged down a Lawrence Heward clearance. He then raced clear but Fenty already saw the danger and came racing out blocked the youngster’s attempt on goal. The ball then fell to Curtly Matin-Wyatt but he wasted his chance with a daisy cutter of a shot much to the relief of the Owls players.
With no changes at the break it was the Owls who started the brighter as within three minutes Robertson broke free from McCrum but could not beat Osbourne who stood strong at his near post to deny Robertson.
Garforth then had a period of possession and their players were screaming for a penalty in the 54th minute when Mick Jones’ shot appeared to strike the arm who Tim Lowe from close range but Luke Watson waved away their appeals.
Wressell should have had his first senior goal five minutes later but headed over from five yards out after some wonderful skill from substitute Alex Flett.
At the other end, Martin-Wyatt blazed over the bar with just Fenty to beat after rolling Wressell inside the box.
The Owls were just as guilty of squandering big chances as a Peter Winn corner was whipped in to the feet of Robertson. His trickery made room to spin and shoot from inside the six-yard box but he too could only fire the ball over the bar.
The game turned on its head with just 15 minutes to go. A challenge from Trott sparked a coming together of players after Jordan Outerbridge reacted to the tackle. The Referee deemed that he had gone over the ball and sent Trott straight off.
With a man light, you would have forgiven the Owls for sitting back and settling for a point but this is not their nature. Just four minutes after the sending off, a free kick taken by Flett found Robertson inside the box. Robertson beat the keeper to the ball, but his header was knocked down and luckily fell to his own feet and smashed the ball home into the empty net sending the away fans into ecstasy.
Garforth did try to fashion a reply but were unable to in the remaining minutes giving the Owls a hard fought three points.
